After moving from center to guard, former Florida OL Jake Slaughter brings rugged physicality to Los Angeles, aiming to shield Justin Herbert and solidify a revamped offensive line.
New Florida head coach Jon Sumrall has a good defense, wide receiver corps and backfield.
During spring football, Sumrall noted that the team has a ways to go to find a QB 1 and a starting five for the offensive line. The Gators need their offensive line to become more physical during training camp.
No doubt, losing offensive lineman Jake Slaughter to the 2026 NFL Draft was a key loss for the Gators this offseason. The Los Angeles Chargers selected him in the second round, and he could have a major impact as a rookie.
Field Yates of ESPN noted that the Chargers are expected to move Slaughter from center to guard this offseason. He could earn a starting spot on a Los Angeles team who needed a boost on the offensive line after its loss to the New England Patriots in the playoffs.
"Every one of Slaughter's 2,053 college snaps came at center, but he projects to play right away at guard for the Chargers after they signed center Tyler Biadasz in free agency," Fowler wrote.
"Slaughter is tough and rugged while possessing the lateral quickness to excel in a zone-blocking scheme. He's one of four linemen the Chargers drafted and should make an instant impact."
Following the draft, Slaughter said he wasn't worried about what position he'll be plugged in with the Chargers. He just wants to play.
"I played a good bit of guard as a young guy in college," Slaughter said, via the Chargers. "I fit best at center at school, but, you know, we talked about [guard] at the Combine at the Senior Bowl.
"Just now when they gave me the call like, 'Hey, we're going to go compete, you know, get the best five guys, maybe six guys on the field at once.' Just go compete... I'm preparing to go be a ballplayer, man. I want to get on the field and go help the team win games."
The Chargers are built to compete for the playoffs in the upcoming season. Los Angeles lost to the Patriots 16-3 in the wild-card round thanks to an offensive line that let Justin Herbert be hit numerous times and sacked six times.
Slaughter should help in that regard.
