Keon Zipperer blasted his former coach’s wasted potential as Jon Sumrall’s undefeated Gators surge into the top ten following a dominant rushing display against the Rebels.
The Florida Gators have skyrocketed to the No. 8 ranking after blowing out Ole Miss 52-28 at "The Swamp" on Saturday.
First-year head coach Jon Sumrall has his team 4-0 before getting prepared to play No. 25 Missouri in Week 5. The Gators have matched their win total from a season ago, when the team finished 4-8.
Billy Napier didn't last the season before he was fired. The Gators were expected to compete for the College Football Playoff before starting the season flat.
Sumrall inherited a lot of Napier's players. Based on the early results so far, the difference between Florida this season and last season appears to be coaching.
After beating Ole Miss on Saturday, former Florida tight end Keon Zipperer called out Napier on social media, suggesting he wasted his talent with the Gators.
“Billy Napier, you should be ashamed of yourself, brah," Zipperer wrote. "All that talent you had at Florida and wasted.”
Zipperer decided to retire from football for medical reasons in 2024.
Napier took the lessons he learned from failing with the Gators and took over the James Madison program, which made the CFP last season, after Bob Chesney left for UCLA. Napier has seen no fall off from the Dukes so far. JMU is 4-0 after beating Old Dominion 46-20 on Saturday.
As for Florida, Sumrall has his team firing on all cylinders as the team is in the thick of its nine-game SEC schedule. The Gators beat Auburn by five points before putting the belt to Ole Miss on Saturday.
Florida will next face a Mizzou team that lost to Mississippi State on Saturday. The Gators have a good chance to gain momentum before they'll play Texas on Oct. 17 and Georgia on Oct. 31.
Obviously, Florida will have to avoid the same trap Ole Miss fell into this weekend when it takes on Missouri. The Gators are coming off a huge win at home, and they'll have to focus to beat the Tigers.
Florida's offense is legit.
The Gators have a dangerous rushing attack that is propelling them early on this season. They rushed for 302 yards and six touchdowns over Ole Miss.
Running back Jadan Baugh rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns against Ole Miss' defense, while smashing a record held by Tim Tebow. Running back Duke Clark had a breakout game, adding 126 yards and a score.
The running game is helping quarterback Aaron Philo gain confidence in the early season. He could become even more dangerous as he earns reps this fall.
