Despite stagnant rushing numbers and rising sack counts, the Sooners are doubling down on their veteran signal-caller as they fight for bowl eligibility against a surging Florida defense.
Plans could always change in the next few days, but for now, the Oklahoma Sooners are set on keeping John Mateer as QB1 vs. the Florida Gators.
Florida has a bit of a quarterback controversy of its own, but it's safe to say that no one expected Mateer to lose his starting job with the Sooners. According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Mateer's job is safe, for now.
The senior has completed a career-high 65.6% of his passes this season, but is only averaging 7.4 yards per completion.
He's thrown seven interceptions to 13 touchdowns, so it's not quite a two-to-one ratio for Mateer.
Remember, this is a guy who threw 29 touchdowns to just seven interceptions in 2024 at Washington State before coming to Oklahoma.
Last year, in his first season with the Sooners, he completed 247 of 397 passes for 2,885 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Florida must exploit Mateer's weaknesses
It's also worth keeping in mind that Mateer was only sacked 25 times last season. With four games remaining, he's already been brought down 20 times.
The other element of Mateer's game is what he can do with his legs, but that's been a non-factor this season.
Coming off a year where Mateer had eight rushing touchdowns, he's yet to find the back of the endzone on the ground this season.
Mateer is averaging just 1.7 yards per attempt, clocking in at an abysmal 145 rushing yards on 86 carries.
For reference, he ran for 826 yards with 15 touchdowns in '24, and had 431 rushing yards with eight touchdowns in his OU debut.
Mateer has tried to use his legs a bit more these past two weeks, so that's something the Gators need to be aware of on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The Texas native rushed for 29 and 37 yards in his last two games, respectively. From Sept. 19 to Oct. 17 he had just 27 total rushing yards, so that four-game stretch was two yards shy than what he just did against South Carolina last week.
Oklahoma sits at 4-4 overall and has three ranked opponents still on the schedule this season. A win for Florida could knock them out of bowl contention, and that would be quite the development for a Mateer-led squad.
Mateer has thrown for fewer than 200 yards in a pair of games this season, and it was only a few games ago that he had a three-interception day against Kentucky.
