Jon Sumrall’s debut campaign hinges on high-stakes clashes with Ole Miss, Texas, and FSU as the Gators fight to reclaim SEC dominance and restore a struggling program.
After an abysmal 2025 college football season, the Florida Gators will look to flip the script with newly hired head coach Jon Sumrall at the helm this year.
Sumrall, who joined the program back in December of 2025, has done an outstanding job on the recruitment trail this offseason. However, while the former Tulane Green Waves’ head coach continues his efforts at acquiring talent for the future, it’s clear that the Gators must prove themselves during the 2026 college football season.
Here are the three most pivotal games for Florida and Sumrall heading into the upcoming season.
Week Four vs. Ole Miss

While the Rebels have plenty of momentum with quarterback Trinidad Chambliss returning for another season, both programs are set to debut new head coaches in 2026, as Pete Golding will replace Lane Kiffin after his departure to LSU. If the Gators are able to pull away with a victory over Ole Miss, a win would perfectly set the program up for its brutal conference schedule.

Despite missing the College Football Playoffs last season, head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns did an excellent job of retaining multiple stars in quarterback Arch Manning and EDGE Colin Simmons, while also adding wide receiver Cam Coleman in the transfer portal. Clearly, the Gators will be the underdogs heading into this matchup, but the outcome will be a terrific chance for fans to gauge Sumrall’s progress in Year One.
Week 13 @ Florida State

Luckily for the Sumrall, the program has had plenty of success against the fellow in-state rival, as Florida has won the last two matchups. However, the highly anticipated contest will be a tough hurdle for the newest coaching staff to leap over in order to give promise to the struggling fanbase. Running back Jadan Baugh clearly has the Seminoles’ number, as the rising star recorded 347 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 49 carries in his last two games against Florida State.
