With playoff hopes on the line, Jon Sumrall must choose between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. before facing the formidable Bulldogs in Atlanta.
Do the Florida Gators believe Aaron Philo can lead them to a win over the No. 3-ranked team in the country?
Only time will tell. For now, head coach Jon Sumrall is staying quiet.
The last thing Florida needs to do is give the Georgia Bulldogs an advantage, so it's smart to keep it close to the chest as to whether or not Philo will be starting in Week 9.
Florida's neutral-site showdown against the Bulldogs is one of two massive tests they have remaining this season.
If the Gators are serious about being College Football Playoff contenders, they'll have to run through both Georgia and Kentucky in these next few weeks.
The question is, will Philo return to his position as QB1, or does Florida ride the hot hand and stick with Tramell Jones Jr.?
Philo led Florida to a win at Auburn and vs. Ole Miss
One can make the argument that Jones Jr. contributed to the Gators' stellar upset win in Austin, and that's absolutely true, but without Philo, who knows if this team would've started the year 4-0.
Philo threw for just north of 200 yards in a shocking 44-39 win against the Tigers, and then the very next week he guided Florida to an even more stunning 52-28 victory over No. 4 Ole Miss.
The Georgia native then was smacked in the face with reality as Florida dropped games to Missouri and South Carolina.
Florida wasn't expected to lose either of those games, but they did, and then Philo hit rock bottom when he was ruled out of the Texas game due to an injury.
The outcome of that Longhorns game could've gone much differently if Philo had played, but all Florida can do is push forward with the information they know, and that's that Jones Jr. was the QB in that one.
Both QBs have a 70% completion percentage
Obviously, Jones Jr. has a much smaller sample size than Philo, but he's consistently been on the money with his throws.
Philo has a trio of interceptions to nine touchdowns, and it's worth noting that he's attempted 149 passes this season to Jones Jr.'s 64.
The sophomore completed 45 of his 64 passes (70.3%), while Philo has a 70.5% completion percentage.
Jones Jr. has four touchdowns to two interceptions, and while he protected the ball against the Longhorns, his picks in garbage time against Campbell and South Carolina are a bit alarming.
This is a decision that won’t be made overnight, but time is ticking as Saturday, Oct. 31 quickly approaches.
