Myles Bailey's power display fuels Florida State's Game 2 win over NC State, even as errors mar the victory.
It was not perfect, and you can bet Florida State baseball coach Link Jarrett will have something to say about the Seminoles performance, but a win is a win. Jarrett's boys pounded out 14 hits on Saturday, led once again by Myles Bailey, as No. 11 Florida State (18-4, 4-1 ACC) earned an 11-5 victory over No. 10 NC State in Game 2 of the teams' three-game weekend series.
The topics of discussion in Jarrett’s post-game press conference could be the four errors the Seminoles committed, the nine base runners they left stranded, and the fact starting pitcher Trey Beard got chased after three innings.
But one reason to be euphoric in victory is the continued production of Bailey from the batter’s box. Bailey went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and three RBI.
Those two home runs are the 11th and 12th for Bailey this season, to go with his 31 RBI. In the first inning, Bailey’s first home run of the day traveled 447 feet at a speed estimated at 117 mph. That home run ball may not have landed yet.
Not to be outdone, Florida State's Brayden Dowd parked a grand slam over the wall in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open for the Seminoles.
Chase Williams got some playing time and recorded an RBI double, Kelvyn Paulino booked an RBI single, and freshman John Stuetzer went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
The Seminoles pitching staff combined to strikeout 12 Wolfpack hitters. Beard recorded seven strikeouts, four walks, six hits and four earned runs on 96 pitches in 3.2 innings of work. He was replaced by Chris Knier (1-0), who got his first win of the season.
Brodie Purcell came in and got his second save, on the strength of five strikeouts over four innings. He allowed one earned run, no walks, and three hits.
NC State (18-5, 3-2) was led by Luke Nixon (4-for-5, two RBI), Ty Head (2-for-5, HR, one RBI), Dalton Bargo (2-for-5) and Rett Johnson (1-for-3, RBI). Jacob Dudan (4-1) took the loss for the Wolfpack. He allowed eight earned runs, walked four, and struck out six on 111 pitches. The NC State pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts.
