Plenty of great stories came from Florida State football's win over Alabama in Week One. While most focused on the players who took the field, the latest - and funniest - anecdote came from famous comedian Bert Kreischer.
The often shirtless comedy star went to FSU and is a noted Seminoles fan. As the sellout crowd on August 30 saw in person, he took to the field pre-game to deliver a rousing pep talk to the fans over the PA. He and fellow comedian Tom Segura both got to stay on the field as Chief Osceola and Renegade rode out and spiked the spear into the ground.
"This is the best day of our lives," Kreischer recalled saying to Segura, both of them crying, before FSU went on to upset then-No. 8 Alabama 31-17.
Kreischer shared the pre-game story on the Rich Eisen Show this week. Much of it, Noles fans already knew. However, Kreischer also shared a new tidbit: the brief and perhaps ill-advised text conversation he had with FSU head coach Mike Norvell later that night after the big win. Kreischer was, in his words, "hammered" at the time of sending the message. A classic drunk text.
As Kreischer told it to The Rich Eisen Show, he and Segura were out late in Tallahassee eating dinner. At Segura's encouragement, Kreischer sent a message to Norvell:
"Hey coach, congrats on the win. Tommy and I are in Tallahassee still, and we want to know if you want to decompress tonight with a slumber party? Maybe watch The Goonies, have some ice cream, and just chit-chat until the sun comes up. Hit me back. Bert."
Norvell's response, according to Kreischer: "Thanks. You had a real appreciation for being here and the impact on the university. Great speech..."
"Coach stuff," Kreischer clarified after trailing off.
The segment with Eisen is hilarious, and it's a unique window into the gameday experience for Norvell and one of FSU's most popular alumni. It's worth watching just for Kreischer's delivery and the laughter that broke out in the studio.
While the interview is mostly peppered with humor, Kreischer's reenactment of his on-field speech is borderline chill-inducing even for those unaffiliated with FSU. His passion for the Noles (and for taking his shirt off in public) is evident as he describes the emotions he felt on the field.
The 10th-ranked Seminoles have earned plenty of positive press as they enjoy an early-season off week this week. 2-0 FSU returns to action next Saturday, September 20, against Kent State.
