Florida State football has moved up in the polls without even playing a game. The Seminoles rose from No. 10 to No. 7 in the AP Top 25 following their off week, a result of some poor performances by other teams who started the week ranked ahead of the Noles.
FSU also rose to No. 9 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, up from No. 12 last week.
These rankings are the latest in what has been a meteoric rise in the polls to start the season. Head coach Mike Norvell's team went from unranked entering Week One to No. 10 in the country less than 24 hours after completing a 77-3 win over East Texas A&M in Week Two.
A pair of future opponents and fellow ACC contenders near FSU in last week's poll experienced some movement, as well. Clemson dropped from No. 12 in the AP Top 25 to completely unranked after a loss to Georgia Tech on the road. Miami impressed in a decisive win over newly-ranked USF, moving up from No. 5 to No. 4.
The Seminoles host Miami on Oct. 4 and travel to Clemson on Nov. 8. Those two matchups will be pivotal in deciding who earns an appearance in the ACC Championship Game in December - with potential College Football Playoff implications, as well.
FSU returns to action this Saturday, hosting Kent State at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Golden Flashes are 0-2 following losses to Texas Tech (62-14) and Buffalo (31-28). That game is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on ACC Network.
FSU head coach Mike Norvell is slated to speak with reporters on Monday.
