Seminoles unleashed powerful runs and deep passes, showcasing standout performances from Daniels, Boggs, and Kromah in their explosive spring scrimmage.
As Mike Norvell spoke to the media after Florida State's first spring scrimmage on Saturday morning, "explosive" became the word of the day.
Norvell said the Seminoles ran about 100 plays, which is what he'd aimed for. In his sixth year as head coach in Tallahassee, Norvell started the scrimmage by placing the ball on the 10-yard line and letting his players battle it out in pads.
Auburn transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels completed a pass to receiver Jayvan Boggs, who ran a post route on the opening drive. It became Norvell's first "explosive play" mention of the day.
Boggs' catch highlighted his improvement from his freshman year, as he enters his sophomore campaign with Florida State.
"For Boggs to go see that next step in his progression as a receiver, I think he's had a great week," Norvell told reporters on Saturday. "Made some good plays, but that was a really good way to start the day."
The running back group maintained positive momentum with highlight runs over the defense. Norvell noted Amari Thomas' big run during scrimmage, but Ousmane Kromah captured the attention on social media.
Kromah received a handoff from Daniels, and when the defense closed on gap, he maneuvered through another. He made his teammates in the other side of the ball miss, stiff-arming one of them until they brought him down.
Norvell said redshirt junior Samuel Singleton Jr. and Quintrevion Wisner, in his first spring scrimmage with the Noles after transferring from Texas in January, also had impressive runs Saturday, and overall, the running back group performed well.
"I think each of them had their moments," Norvell said. "I think, like I said, we got 100 plays, so there were some different opportunities, you know, some explosive plays, explosive runs."
The quarterbacks at the helm behind some of these plays -- Daniels and Kevin Sperry -- continued their competition for the starting job. Neither has yet pulled away from the other.
Norvell has seen good plays and bad plays from Daniels and Sperry. He said Daniels is completing passes at a high percentage, though missed a couple of throws on Saturday, and added that Sperry made some nice throws that he missed from earlier in the week.
"It's a really good room, and I think those guys are battling," Norvell said. "I'd say a really solid day for them because of the good, and then some of the things we have to get corrected."
Norvell witnessed the young players and veterans make explosive plays throughout the scrimmage, maintaining a balance between passing and running the ball.
Although explosive plays defined Florida State's first spring scrimmage, Norvell said the goal is to make the next scrimmage more "game-like" and, hopefully, by the end of spring, they'll be back in Doak Campbell Stadium.
