Florida State's Season Is Lost, but Lopez Still Has Plenty to Gain
Nov 6, 2026 1:00 PM

Florida State's season hasn't gone as planned; however, the final four games offer Jasen Lopez a chance to prove his value to the incoming coaching staff and programs across the country.

With Mike Norvell out and Florida State sitting at 3-5, the remainder of the 2026 season isn't a complete loss, at least for the players.

With four games remaining, the Seminoles still have a chance to become bowl-eligible. However, regardless of whether they do or don’t, the season will still be seen as a disappointment and a loss of financial resources.

Given the history of players opting out of bowl games outside of the College Football Playoff, combined with the coaching regime change, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if several Seminoles decided to sit out and use the time to weigh their options.

But while the season can’t end on a positive note for Florida State as a program, it can for a number of players.

What the next four games provide is an opportunity for the players who take the field to prove their value, not only to the incoming coaching staff but also to other programs across the country.

In today's college football landscape, the word commitment has lost its meaning for the players and schools they commit to. The players can build tape for the rest of the college football landscape to see.

Depending on the next Seminoles coach and where he comes from, some players currently on the roster could find themselves without a spot, regardless of whether they want to honor their commitment.

For the players who committed to Florida State, the coaching change could leave them looking for a new home with less uncertainty and a better opportunity to win and develop.

With that in mind, Florida State freshman wide receiver Jasen Lopez has a golden opportunity to increase his value, either by earning a place with the incoming coaching staff or by catching the attention of programs across the country looking to add talent through the transfer portal.

One player's misfortune can create an opportunity for another.

Florida State won't just finish out the season without Norvell; they're also going to do it without star wide receiver Duce Robinson, who hurt his knee in the second half of the 36-24 loss to Clemson.

“Just want to let everybody know that Duce Robinson is out for the year,” interim head coach Rick Stockstill said. “He hurt his knee and we'll end up having surgery.

Robinson returned to Florida State looking to improve his draft stock after finishing 2025 with the 11th-most receiving yards in the country (1,081 yards). However, his production has dropped in 2026, with just 24 receptions for 438 yards. Now, with his season ending because of a knee injury, his draft stock could take another hit.

But with Robinson out, true freshman wide receiver Jasen Lopez, along with others, will have an opportunity to take on a bigger role.

Now, the question is whether Lopez can seize the moment and show he can be the playmaker many believed he could be before the season started.

“They are going to get a great opportunity and a bigger role in this offense because you lose an All-ACC receiver,” Stockstill said. “Got a great opportunity to step up, and I do believe will step up and have a great game and make great contributions to our offense.”

Stockstill understands he is a freshman and can’t “throw the kitchen sink at him.” But he understands his ability is in letting him play fast, free, and allowing him to use his natural athleticism to make plays.

Coming out of Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Hollywood, Fla., Lopez was a four-star recruit ranked No. 224 nationally and the No. 29 wide receiver in the country by 247Sports.

During his high school career, Lopez caught 313 passes for 5,211 yards and 59 touchdowns. He recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in each season. As a senior, he finished with 56 receptions for 1,005 yards and 11 touchdowns.

During the preseason, Lopez had his talent on display, with some believing he could earn a starting role and make an immediate impact.

“Jasen Lopez Has been ridiculous this preseason. Likely a favorite to start for Florida State in the slot at this stage,” Dustin Lewis said in a post on X.

However, up to this point, Lopez has just eight receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown with Norvell calling the offense.

For Lopez, the next four games are about more than filling the void left by Robinson.

They are an audition to showcase his talent, not only to the next head coach in Tallahassee but also to programs across the country that may offer the freshman wide receiver an even better opportunity heading into his second year.

Now, Lopez has a chance to perform under the lights while the college football world watches how Florida State responds to Norvell's departure.

The next four games could be the opportunity the freshman needs to prove he can be the playmaker many believed he could be before the season began, while showcasing what his talent could add to a team going into next season for both the incoming coaching staff and programs across the country.
