Parker Messick fueled Cleveland's victory with a dominant one-hit performance in Miami, stifling the Marlins' win streak just days after earning his first career All-Star nod.
MIAMI — Fresh off being added to the American League All-Star team, former Florida State pitcher Parker Messick turned in one of the best outings of his young career.
Messick took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and left the mound with only one run allowed on one hit to lead the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-2 win over the Marlins on Friday.
Messick weathered the storm throughout the outing. Despite issuing four walks with one strikeout, the only blemish came in the form of a solo home run by Heriberto Hernandez in the sixth inning.
“I think this is another outing that shows Parker’s growth,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “He didn’t have great stuff, didn’t have great command, yet did not give up a hit for a long time.”
Through 19 games this season, Messick has an 8-5 record with a 2.73 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 110 strikeouts in 112 innings. The Plant City, FL, native posted a 2.72 ERA through seven starts to begin his big league career in 2025.
“Parker just continues to get better and better each time,” Vogt said.
Messick outdueled Sandy Alcantara, who turned in another solid performance. The Marlins ace threw seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.
The Marlins collectively knocked in four hits, half of them being solo home runs from Hernandez and Leo Jimenez.
Jimenez, who has struggled throughout most of the season since being traded to the Marlins in April, has gone 7-for-24 (.292) with two home runs and five RBI in his last seven games.
The Guardians took a 2-0 lead on a home run by Chase DeLauter in the fourth inning, his 10th of the season.
The Guardians stretched their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Travis Bazzana, another Cleveland All-Star.
With the World Cup quarterfinal match between England and Norway kicking off on Saturday, thousands of English fans took over the outfield stands at loanDepot. The announced attendance was 15,605, but it certainly felt like more. The fans treated the event like a Premier League soccer match, singing throughout the middle part of the game.
Vogt said as a player and manager he has been at the home of the Marlins since 2012, and Friday was “the best atmosphere I’ve ever been here.”
The Marlins (52-43) saw their six-game winning streak snapped with the loss. They will look to rebound on Saturday with Eury Pérez (5-6, 3.84 ERA) on the mound. Perez is coming off seven innings of perfection against the Athletics last week.
The Guardians will counter with Tanner Bibee (2-9, 4.06 ERA).
