From shortstop to triple-crown catcher, the Florida State legend cemented his legacy with a record-breaking 2008 season before leading the San Francisco Giants to three World Series titles.
Former Florida State baseball star Buster Posey could do it all on the baseball diamond. He played shortstop, catcher and pitcher for the Seminoles and was the shining star of collegiate baseball during his junior season in 2008. On Thursday, it was announced that Posey had been elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame in the class of 2026.
Posey was an elite athlete in high school, as he played four different sports. Recruited by Mike Martin, Posey started 65 games at shortstop for the Seminoles as a true freshman, and batted .346 with four home runs and 48 runs batted in.
The Florida State coaching staff convinced Posey to move to catcher as a sophomore, and he did not disappoint. Posey batted .382, swatted three home runs and drove in 65 runs.
In 2008, behind a breakout season from Posey, the Seminoles won 54 games and earned a berth in the men’s College World Series. Posey batted .463 (single-season record) with 26 homers and 93 runs batted in on his way to winning the triple crown in the ACC, and also earned some serious awards and accolades:
- Consensus All-American
- Dick Howser Trophy
- Golden Spikes Award
- Brooks Wallace Award
- ACC Player of the Year
- Johnny Bench Award (later renamed after Posey)
- Baseball America Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year
- 67-game hitting streak spanning the 2007-2008 seasons
As a three-time All-American at Florida State, Posey was selected No. 5 overall by the San Francisco Giants in the 2008 Major League Draft. After a year in the minors, Posey was called up to the big-league club in 2009 after an injury to starting catcher Bengie Molina. Posey went 2-for-17 at the plate in his short stint in the majors that season.
But in 2010, that all changed.
After a trade that sent Molina to the Texas Rangers, Posey was called up again, became the starter at catcher, and never looked back.
Posey’s 12-year career with the Giants was just as decorated. He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2010 after batting .305 with 18 home runs and 67 runs batted in. Posey won the National League MVP award in 2012, and was a seven-time all-star. Posey’s crowning achievement was winning three World Series titles (2010, 2012 and 2013) during his time with the Giants.
Inducted into the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018, Posey’s No. 8 jersey was retired in 2023. Posey is now one of nine former Florida State baseball stars elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame, a group that includes Dick Howser (1979), J.D. Drew (2016), and Mike Martin (2019).
Posey is currently the President of Baseball Operations for the Giants.
