Florida State pitcher Trey Beard is enjoying that feeling on Sunday as he was selected in the fifth round (pick 147) of the Major League Draft by the Miami Marlins. That is a slot valued at $496,600.00.
A native son of Dunedin, Florida, Beard was the Saturday starter for coach Link Jarrett and the Seminoles during the 2026 college baseball season. As a third-team All-ACC performer, Beard posted a 6-1 record with an ERA of 4.50. In 68 innings pitched, Beard recorded 97 strikeouts and issued 24 walks. With a WHIP of 1.25, he allowed a batting average of .236.
During the season, Beard received multiple Pitcher of the Week honors, both in the ACC and nationally. Beard recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts in a win over Wake Forest, hung nine Ks against Costal Carolina in the Tallahassee regional, and posted eight strikeouts against Miami.
Beard caught the attention of Jarrett as a sophomore at Florida Atlantic. In 2025, Beard was the first pitcher since 2013 to record 100 or more strikeouts. Beard went 7-1 with an ERA of 3.14. He posted 118 strikeouts and only 32 walks that season and allowed opposing hitters a batting average of .199. To start the 2025 season, Beard struck out 10+ batters in each of his first four starts.
When Beard hit the transfer portal, Jarrett wasted no time bringing the talented left-hander to Tallahassee.
As of Sunday, at the beginning of the fifth round, Beard was the fourth Florida State player taken off the draft board, and the second FSU pitcher. The 2026 Pitcher of the Year in the ACC, Wes Mendes, went to the Houston Astros in the second round (No. 57 overall) on day 1 of the MLB draft. That slot has a value of $1,677,400.00.
Other Seminoles drafted so far have been first baseman Myles Bailey in the second round by the Chicago Cubs, with a slot value of $1,120, 900.00, and outfielder Brayden Dowd in the third round by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and comes with a slot value of $915,100.00.
Florida State has sent over 300 talented players to the Major Leagues in the program’s history, including a school-record 11 players in the 2025 draft.
