Kirby Smart knows what he is up against this week.
The Georgia Bulldogs head into a massive showdown this weekend against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, attempting to pull off their first road win and first regular season victory vs. the Tide since 2007.
Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart has had his trouble with the team in crimson, but there is no question that his team is absolutely capable of pulling off a win here and establishing themselves once more as the ruler of the roost in the SEC. If Georgia is going to win though, it is going to have to limit young Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell, who is looking more and more like a superstar with each passing week.
Smart was asked this week about Russell, and it seems clear he and his Bulldogs team are well aware of what they are up against in the sensational sophomore.
Georgia, Kirby Smart Know What They Are Facing in Keelon Russell
"I knew about him in high school and watched his high school tape," Smart said. "He was an elite player, probably the best quarterback in the country coming out. Then he kind of goes away and disappears for a year, re-appears and is just unbelievable. Savvy, arm strength, pocket awareness, people will make him out to be a runner but he doesn't run unless he has to...he scrambles to throw, scrambles to run, he's accurate, he's smart. He is very talented."
Clearly, Smart and the defensive staff are not going to get caught napping when it comes to getting his team prepared for Russell. It's no secret that he looks like one of the best in the whole country right now, and if he continues to perform the way he has been as of late, it's going to be very difficult for the Dawgs to win.
It's up to Smart and the defense to be able to prevent that from happening, and while the challenge is very real, Russell is still a young quarterback who has never seen a defense like he will see on Saturday night.
Georgia needs to remind him of that reality early and often, and if they can do that, they will have a wonderful chance to win.
While the Dawgs have not faced an offense like this and that will be a ton of the narrative this week leading up to the game, folks would do well to remind themselves Russell and this offense has not faced a defense like this either. It's the classic unstoppable force vs. immovable object matchup, and something will have to give in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday night.
Time will tell ultimately which one gives.
