The Georgia Bulldogs opponent may have a quarterback controversy.
The Georgia Bulldogs are now officially through their bye week and into game week with another hated rival on deck in the Florida Gators, a game which will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
While the games against the Gators have gotten closer in recent years, Georgia has still won five in a row. This is a new Florida team though under a new head coach in Jon Sumrall, and even though the Gators have suffered some horrible looking losses, they have also gone through periods this year where they look like a legitimate contender.
Sumrall has his team coming off a bye week as well and will have them ready to play, but the only question is who is going to be playing quarterback. During the Florida win on the road against Texas, Tramell Jones Jr. got his first start and delivered the Gators a major spark after things stalled out for Aaron Philo en route to the back-to-back losses. Now, Sumrall has a decision to make.
Will Gators Roll with Jones or Go Back to Philo?
Sumrall was non-committal last week when he was asked about the plan moving forward, and in reality, it may depend on the health of Philo. Coming out of a bye, one would assume Philo is now healthy with a full two weeks rest, however the initial injury was a bit of a mystery with his shoulder.
Philo likely could have played against the Longhorns, but if he cannot drive the football the same way he was early in the season, then he is a much less effective quarterback. Jones proved to the staff they can win with him, but the reality is that this is a better Bulldogs team than what they beat in Austin.
The element Philo's arm -- if he is indeed healthy -- brings may be something this offense needs in order to have a real shot at winning. With that being said, if he is not fully healthy, then Jones is probably the better option.
All things being equal, one would assume this is still Philo's job, but Sumrall has a fascinating decision in front of him before the biggest game of his time leading the Gators so far.
The Dawgs are going to have to be prepared for either quarterback, but they will certainly be paying close attention to see if a decision is made during this week.
