The Georgia Bulldogs have another light opponent this week.
The Georgia Bulldogs are in the thick of game week after a 60-point victory to start the season against Tennessee State on a very warm day in Athens where the starters were pulled early in the second quarter.
Fans rightfully have gripes with starting the season against an opponent that with all due respect simply does not belong on the same field as a program like Georgia, but such is the nature of the sport. In week two, while things do get a little bit more difficult against an actual FBS opponent, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are not a real test either.
The Bulldogs are more than a 40-point favorite against a Hilltoppers team which suffered a blowout loss at the hands of Nevada last week, and the question is rightfully being asked: are these games preparing Georgia for SEC play which starts on the road next week?
Bulldogs Face Arkansas on Road Next Week to Begin Conference Play
There are two schools of thought on the cupcake games to begin the season. On one hand, it allows essentially for extra practice reps and guys getting on the same page, not to mention backups coming in and getting the chance to build depth through experience.
On the other hand though, these games do not do much to prepare Georgia or anyone else in the SEC for that matter for the gauntlet they have ahead. The Bulldogs are traveling to Fayetteville in week three to face a hungry Arkansas team beginning a new era of their own before returning home to face a top-10 Oklahoma team.
Western Kentucky is not exactly getting Georgia ready for games to start getting very real by the time the middle of this first month arrives.
At the same time, there is not much incentive to playing extremely difficult non-conference games with the 2025 Texas Longhorns and their loss at Ohio State to start the season a great argument against scheduling showdowns like this.
Still, fans who spend hard-earned money each and every week to watch this team play deserve better than what the product was on Saturday against Tennessee State and it does not get much better in the second week.
Regardless, fans will still show up and show out to another very warm Sanford Stadium. The Dawgs had just better hope they are ready to go next week when the season starts to get real.
