The Georgia Bulldogs are going to be a young group this year.
The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into the regular season not long from now with fall camp in full swing, scrimmages going down, and the coaching staff making its final evaluations as to who is going to have big roles.
When camp starts, reality for most teams is they already have a pretty good idea of what most spots look like, but Georgia has seen some last minute pushes from young players who are looking to secure roles. Most interestingly may be the offensive line, which already had some tremendous both veteran and young talent, but there are two true freshmen who have played so well since the spring that they may be too good to keep off the field early.
Both Ekene Ogboko at tackle and Zykie Helton at guard have been making a ton of noise, and intel from UGA Sports On3 reveals that each is going to have a role to play this season.
Ogboko and Helton Both May Play Major Snaps for Georgia
Helton has been pencilled in as a starter at right guard by many since the spring, and On3 revealed that he has only strengthened that reality this fall with performances that make him look more like a seasoned veteran than a young player getting ready for his first season of college football.
Barring something extremely unforeseen, he will be this team's starting right guard in week one.
Ogboko has a bit more complicated of a path to playing time right away, and while he did have a huge scrimmage last weekend where he looked ready to go, senior Earnest Greene has had a tremendous camp as well and is without a doubt the top left tackle on the team.
Clearly though, Ogboko is next up when Greene departs Athens or should he wind up getting hurt this season, but a swing tackle role could also very much be in the cards if the noise surrounding his play is real. The best part with the young tackle is that unlike Helton, Bulldogs are not going to be depending on him to play a huge role early where there will undoubtedly be a learning curve.
He can come along at his own pace, keep getting better, and in an ideal world, be ready to absolutely explode out of the gate as next year's starting left tackle.
Georgia develops in the trenches as well as anyone, and these two youngsters are just the latest pieces of evidence of that fact.
