The Georgia Bulldogs may be pumping the brakes on one freshman.
The Georgia Bulldogs are exactly two weeks away from the regular season, and the contributors who are going to be a huge part of the operation this season have started to take shape.
In order to secure a role, guys had to have strong springs and continued that momentum into fall camp, and for one Bulldogs true freshman who was getting a ton of hype a couple of months ago, it has not quite carried over to the fall.
Freshman tight end/oversized slot receiver Kaiden Prothro looked in the spring like he was going to force his way into the rotation this year, but according to some intel from UGA Sports On3, it has not fully translated to fall. While there have been flashes, the consistency had not been there prior to this weekend's second scrimmage of camp.
Prothro Has Not Been Consistent Enough This Spring
"From the sound of it, Prothro has had an up-and-down camp thus far. There is zero doubt about his overall ability, but the consistency just hasn’t been there," Jake Rowe wrote, adding that a strong showing on Saturday could go a long way towards securing some kind of role.
Ultimately, Kirby Smart is not going to put a true freshman on the field unless he has shown beyond any shadow of a doubt that he's ready for the responsibility. Things looked like they could be trending that way for Prothro, but for whatever reason, he has not been able to put it all together in the fall. This does not mean he won't see the field at all by any means as a unique mismatch to opposing defenses, but it also does not bode great for him being a significant piece of the 2026 offense.
Smart would prefer to allow young players to develop anyway, so unless Prothro turns it up here in the next week to force his way onto the field, it may wind up being a developmental year for the former four-star who was rated as a top-50 player in high school football last cycle.
Perhaps the scrimmage allows Prothro one more chance to show the coaching staff what he can do, but if he has not done it consistently to this point, it's hard to see him playing a role where he does much more than rotate in on certain packages.
Time is starting to tick for Prothro to be an impact freshman, and all eyes will be on him for the next two weeks.
