Illinois football coach Bret Bielema shared his amusement at the possibility of the SEC breaking away from the NCAA.
The Big Ten conference has won three straight College Football Playoff championships, snapping a string of four straight by the SEC and shattering the latter conference's reputation as the nation's best.
With the 2026-27 college football season a little over a month away, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey revealed that his league has had discussions about potentially breaking away from the SEC.
Sankey's comments made national news headlines and caught the attention of Illinois Fighting Illini head coach Bret Bielema, who reacted in a lighthearted yet serious fashion on social media Tuesday.
SEC Admits Secession Talks
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey admitted his league has discussed potentially leaving the NCAA and forming its own postseason playoff, a suggestion made by Georgia president Jere Morehead and head coach Kirby Smart.
Sankey was asked if the talks were "real."
"You phrased the question, 'How real?' So I'll take that as, like, real or not," the SEC commissioner said.
"So they're real," he said at SEC media days.
"People have talked about that. They've opined about the frustrations that bring them to the point of saying we should look at something significantly different."
Bielema Reacts to SEC Admission
Bielema was hired as Illinois' head coach in Dec. 2020 and has experience coaching in the SEC from his time with the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The Illinois head coach sympathized with Sankey's position based on comments posted to his X account.
"Pull this one and it plays jingle bells!" Bielema wrote with two laughing/crying emojis and a green check mark.
"What a great time to be a part of it all...It's a new world and a new way to make it better than ever before.
"Best is yet to come for all players and fans coast to coast #CFB," the Illini coach concluded.
Bielema has a 37-26 record as head coach of the Fighting Illini, a job he took after five years and a 29-34 record at Arkansas.
He has worked with legendary coaches including former Iowa Hawkeyes coach Hayden Fry, current Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, former Kansas State coach Bill Snyder and North Carolina coach Bill Belichick.
After joining Illinois, he was pulled aside by then-Michigan coach Lloyd Carr and then-Ohio State coach Jim Tressell and told he would need to become a voice for the game, a role Bielema appears to relish as he heads into year six in Champaign.
