In a surprising turn of events, Illinois quarterback Katin Houser was listed as 'doubtful' on Wednesday night's injury report ahead of the Illini's Saturday game at Maryland.
Houser, who transferred from East Carolina, was stellar to start Illinois' 2026 campaign. However, the graduate student suffered a broken hand during the team's 38-37 overtime win over Michigan State, which has sidelined him for the past game and a half. Houser's injury was expected to keep him out of most, if not all, of the remaining games this season.
The implication of Houser's status changing from 'out' to 'doubtful' is that the star quarterback's recovery may be better than initially anticipated. Head coach Bret Bielema provided a glimpse into how Houser was progressing on Thursday morning.
"When you have a surgery, it's easy to just list him as out," Bielema said. "If anybody can participate in activities, you have to list them as something, so I guess we put him as doubtful. He wasn't able to do anything physically at all last week. This week, he's able to come and join us and go through things."
Bielema added that Houser was at practice on Tuesday, but didn't participate in any drills with the team. Houser is throwing the football, but not to the level that he was prior to the injury. Bielema was unable to put a timetable on Houser's return.

Mandatory Credit: Ron Johnson-Imagn Images At the time of Houser's injury on Oct. 10 and subsequent surgery on Oct. 14, the fifth-year passer was estimated to be out for four to six weeks. The best-case scenario set Houser up for a Nov. 13 matchup against No. 7 UCLA, though the longer end of the spectrum could put Houser's status for Nov. 21 against Iowa and Nov. 28 against No. 20 Northwestern in doubt.
In the meantime, true freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II has been keeping Houser's seat warm. The former three-star recruit entered the game against Michigan State and led Illinois to an overtime victory, then helped the Fighting Illini take down Oregon last weekend. While he hasn't been able to assist Clayton on the field yet, Houser's veteran presence has provided meaningful mentorship to the first-time starter.
"Obviously, Michael getting thrust into the action, you saw the results," Bielema said. "To have an entire week to prepare, we tried to submerge him in everything as a starting quarterback. Katin wasn't able to be there at all on the grass with him — he did some meetings with him — but that's another one of the things that made a big statement to me about who Katin Houser is. He was really involved with Michael last week and probably even more this week, and Michael has continued to grow."
Through roughly five quarters and an overtime period of play, Clayton has completed 17 of his 26 passes for 172 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He won Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after throwing for 84 yards and two touchdowns in the win over the Ducks.
On the season, Houser has completed a career-high 66.3% of his passes for 1,440 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. He is currently in his final season of collegiate eligibility after spending four years between Michigan State and East Carolina.
The Fighting Illini are 4-3 and need to win two of their final five games to clinch bowl eligibility for the third consecutive year.
