Illinois head football coach Bret Bielema spoke at length about the university's decision to extend its AD.
The Illinois Fighting Illini athletic program is on a major upswing after years of struggles, culminating in a Final Four appearance this season in men's basketball and a second consecutive winning season for the football program last year.
That success led to a multi-year contract extension for former Illini tight end and current athletic director Josh Whitman, the result of a job well done in Champaign, Ill.
Illinois is considered a fringe candidate or perhaps dark horse contender for a run at the Big Ten title in football this year and a Final Four favorite in basketball giving fans hope for exciting days, months and years to come.
On Tuesday at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago, Illinois head football coach Bret Bielema shared his thoughts on the Whitman contract, putting it into perspective among what has happened with the Illini lately.

Bielema had a mouthful to say about Whitman's extension painting it as a beautiful thing for the program that has employed him since 2020.
"A lot of great things have happened for us at the University of Illinois," Bielema said.
"One of the greatest things last week, Josh Whitman — our AD who's been a huge part of not just success in football, but the University of Illinois the last 10 years — they gave him a contract that pretty much ensures my contract aligns with his, and his is even a little longer," Bielema said.
Bielema appears comfortable in Champaign and has been hard at work attempting to raise the Illini's national profile.
Whitman's Ongoing Support
Bielema also took time to acknowledge the Illinois AD's ongoing support for the Fighting Illini program.
"To have that blessing (aligned contracts), to have an AD that walked that walk with us on a daily basis, is absolutely awesome," Bielema said.
"He's been a huge part of why we've had success."
The Fighting Illini have won back-to-back bowl games over high profile Southeastern Conference opponents and announced themselves as a Big Ten program worth watching.
Illinois hadn't won a bowl game since 2011's Fight Hunger Bowl prior to Bielema's recent pair of victories.
This season, Illinois returns a talented roster led by star defensive back Xavier Scott, who is returning from an injury and was selected as an All-Big Ten member by Scott Dochterman of The Athletic, along with transfer QB Katin Houser, formerly of Michigan State and Illinois.
Bielema named Houser the team's starting quarterback on Tuesday, a development showing confidence in a player who has taken the reins of a team with Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff goals.
The confidence Illinois has shown in its athletic department's leaders is inspiring, now it's time for the Fighting Illini players and coaches to show the university has made the right decisions.
