Sophomore Carson Boyd’s system knowledge clashes with freshman Michael Clayton’s raw Power Four physicality as Bret Bielema seeks a homegrown successor to anchor the Illini depth chart.
It appears there might be a quarterback battle at Illini training camp, but not for the starter.
Illinois head coach Bret Bielema confirmed Katin Houser, the new transfer from East Carolina at Big Ten Media Days as the starting quarterback for the upcoming football season.
But while the QB1 spot seems settled, coach Bielema made it clear that the backup job is one of the battles the coaching staff is closely watching.
Unlike in previous seasons, there will not be a steady, veteran backup in the quarterback's room. Instead, the Illini will rely on two younger, highly regarded players, sophomore Carson Boyd and freshman Michael Clayton.
Boyd will enter camp with a natural advantage having been in offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr.'s system a year longer. Boyd finished his high school career as one of the most productive quarterbacks in the state of Missouri. He would probably have been more highly recruited if he were slightly bigger. He currently stands at 6 feet and 190 pounds.
Clayton brings a complete opposite profile to the QB battle. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound freshman had scholarship offers from over 20 Power Four programs. His size and arm strength are the skills that made him one of the highest recruiting wins at the quarterback spot for Illinois in recent memory.
The contrasting styles is what makes this preseason battle so intriguing. On Monday it looks like Boyd was the one running with the backups which probably is due to him being a year older than Clayton.
If there is one room in Champaign that the combination of Bielema and Lunney Jr. have performed well in, it's the quarterback room. Tommy Devito currently plays for the New England Patriots has built a solid career as a backup in the NFL. Luke Altmyer just wrapped up three seasons in Champaign and is projected to be the backup quarterback with the Detroit Lions.
However the battle winds up, Illini fans will hope their services won't be needed suddenly. Katin Houser comes to Champaign with Big Ten experience (from Michigan State) and 1,872 career offensive snaps.
For the first time in years, the Illini will have a young homegrown player as the designated backup to their starting quarterback. That could show that Illinois is making progress and leveling up the talent that they have been recruiting.
Illinois will kick off the season against UAB on September 3rd, 2026.
