The Illinois quarterback room is being led by Katin Houser with other talented players waiting in the wings.
The Illinois Fighting Illini football team's head coach Bret Bielema has been busy at Big Ten Media Days along with three of the team's other representatives including quarterback Katin Houser, who was named the team's starter earlier this week.
Houser's growing maturity has shined through in recent interviews, an encouraging sign for a team in need of new leadership now that last year's signal caller Luke Altmyer has taken his talents to the NFL's Detroit Lions.
Houser spoke about the Fighting Illini's young quarterbacks room and did so with confidence and excitement as he used a superlative to describe what he has seen so far among his peers.

Houser relayed that he sees himself as a mentor of the Fighting Illini's quarterback room and takes the job seriously.
He also praised Illinois' young backups.
"Yeah, those guys are awesome," Houser said about his backups, including redshirt freshman Carson Boyd, freshman Michael Clayton II, and redshirt freshman Jershaun Newton.
"I mean I was a kid sitting there freshman year in one of those chairs, looking up to an older guy, and I just want to be just a light for them, I want them to feel comfortable asking me questions, going outside the facility hanging out," Houser said at Media Days.
Last year's backups, Hank Beatty and Ethan Hampton, are now with the NFL's Tennessee Titans and and the NCAA's Southern Miss Golden Eagles, respectively.
Beatty signed a three-year deal with Tennessee to play wide receiver after going undrafted while Hampton is preparing to play quarterback again this season.
The Fighting Illini's quarterback room is entirely new this year, but one of the most talented positions on coach Bret Bielema's team, with Houser leading the way.
Houser's Team First Attitude
Houser has a team-first attitude as the dawn of the 2026-27 season draws near with the UAB Blazers first up at Gies Memorial Stadium on Sept. 3 in Champaign.
He plans to lead by example and provide support for his teammates regardless of position, with a focus on the backup quarterbacks.
"(The goal is to) have a good relationship with them because at a certain point they're going to be playing college football and I want them to have success," Houser added at Media Days.
"If I'm going to be playing this year I want to give them as much as I can, as far as mentorship and leadership as well," the Illini starting QB continued.
Houser passed for 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns against six interceptions last season in Greenville, North Carolina with the Pirates, a fantastic third season for a quarterback who had a rough go of it at Michigan State.
The future is now for Houser and the Fighting Illini, and it appears as if the program is in good hands yet again with the season a little over a month away.
