A strategic court ruling restores eligibility for defensive stars Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt, providing an immediate talent injection for Indiana’s quest to defend the national title.

In a massive development on the eve of the season opener, an Indiana circuit court granted a temporary restraining order that clears the path for defensive stars Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt to take the field for a fifth season. Pete Nakos of On3 first reported the ruling, which restores immediate eligibility for the pair of impactful pass rushers as Curt Cignetti’s squad prepares to defend its national title.

The legal saga surrounding college athletics eligibility took another dramatic turn with this latest decision. Thousands of athletes from the high school recruiting class of 2022 were initially granted an extra year of competition following a federal ruling in Colorado that challenged the NCAA age based rules. When a federal appeals court subsequently issued a stay on that broader decision, the fate of non redshirted players looking for a fifth year was thrust into limbo. By securing a localized temporary restraining order through the state court, Indiana ensured its athletes could return to competition without delay while broader legal battles play out nationwide.

For the Hoosiers, securing another season for both defenders changes the dynamic of the front seven overnight. Daley proved to be an absolute force along the defensive line last season. The former Kent State transfer paced Indiana with nineteen tackles for loss and five and a half sacks while securing All Big Ten honorable mention accolades. Though a frustrating injury in the Big Ten Championship game sidelined him for the playoff push, his presence during the regular season set the physical tone for the program.

Wyatt was equally vital off the edge before injury shortened his campaign. Arriving in Bloomington after three years at Maryland, the dynamic linebacker amassed twenty seven tackles, eight tackles for loss, and two and a half sacks in just seven appearances. His return provides critical depth, pass rushing versatility, and veteran leadership to a unit that thrives on creating chaos in opposing backfields.

The court specifically aimed to restore the players to the status they held prior to the eligibility dispute, ensuring that any athlete in good academic standing can suit up immediately. While questions remain about how quickly both players will be integrated into game action with the opener against North Texas arriving immediately, the relief is undeniable. Getting two premium defensive creators back on the roster gives Cignetti a massive boost as Indiana begins its journey to stay atop the college football landscape.
