Dominic Overby's Injury Is A Major Blow To Iowa State Football
Oct 15, 2026 2:33 AM

Iowa State will have to have that next-man-up mentality after wide receiver Dominic Overby suffered a season-ending injury against BYU. Omari Hayes, Cody Jackson, and freshman Jamal Polite Jr. could play a key role in replacing his production.

Iowa State's offense just lost one of it's biggest play makers, and the timing could not be worse. Dominic Overby's season-ending injury against BYU leaves the Cyclones without a receiver who had become a valuable target for quarterback Jaylen Raynor. With six games remaining in the season, Iowa State must find a answer to replace Overby's production and finish the season strong.

A major loss for the Cyclones

Losing Overby is a significant setback because of what he brings to the Cyclones' offense. The 6-foot-5 wideout recorded 10 receptions for 212 yards and one touchdown for 212 yards and one touchdown this season. His 212.2 yards per catch has shown the ability to stretch the field and create explosive plays.

Overby showed promise early in the season, recording 85 receiving yards against Southeast Missouri State. He also caught a touchdown against Utah before making three receptions for 70 yards against West Virginia. Those performances has showed that he could contribute in different situations rather than simply serve as a deep threat.

His size advantage gave Raynor an option to target downfield, particularly when the quarterback needed to make a tight throw into tight coverage. Losing that option forces Iowa State to adjust its offensive approach. The Cyclones will need other receivers to create separation, win one-on-one matchups and turn opportunities into meaningful gains.

Who could step up?

Omari Hayes could become an even more important part of this offense. Hayes entered this stretch as Iowa State's leading receiver with 17 catches through the team's first six weeks. With Oberby unavailable, Hayes could see more targets and become a dependable option when Raynor needs to move the chains. His ability to consistently get open will be key for an offense seeking stability.

Cody Jackson is another player who could help fill the void. Jackson has recorded 10 receptions through six games, tying his teammate Overby in catches. An increased role could give Jackson more opportunities to showcase that he can be a consistent contributor. If he can turn those chances into big time plays, Iowa State maybe able to make up some of the production lost with Overby being out for the year.

Freshman Jamal Polite Jr. is also worth watching. With injuries creating opportunities throughout the receiver room, Polite could get more snaps and become a bigger part of the offense. the challenge he could face as a young receiver learning the details of the system.
