The Simpson College transfer is competing for the starting job in 2026.

Welcome back to our countdown to the 2026 Iowa football season!

Since May 28, we've been counting down the final 100 days until the Hawkeyes swarm out of the Kinnick Stadium tunnel for their season opener against Northern Illinois on Sept. 5.

Each day of the countdown has primarily featured an article profiling a member of the 2026 Hawkeyes based on their jersey number.

The countdown is getting very close to one month until the season opener, but that also means jersey numbers for current players aren't going to be a daily occurrence (no current players wear 37-39), forcing us to go the historical route and find some famous Hawkeyes that wore those numbers.

Featured stories

But like Friday when we featured Jayden Montgomery, we're not going to have that problem for a second straight day.

Today marks 35 days until kickoff, so that means it's time to take a look at the man who wears No. 35 - punter Tanner Philpott.

Get to know him here.

Bio

Hometown: Waukee, Iowa

High School: Waukee Northwest High School

Year: Third-Year

Height: 6-foot-1

Weight: 2`10 pounds

Other notable players to wear No. 35: A recognizable name to wear No. 35 for the Hawkeyes is former linebacker Brad Quast. Quast had major shoes to fill after Larry Station's departure, but he ended his career as a four-year starter and ranked third on Iowa's all-time tackle list when he graduated.

Philpott's career so far

Making the transition from Division-III to Division-I is very uncommon, but we've now seen it twice across two major Hawkeye sports - Bria Medina for women's basketball and now Philpott for football.

While Medina is probably going to play a bench role for the women's basketball squad, Philpott's role for the 2026 Iowa football team is in question because he is competing with Aussie newcomer Boston Everitt.

Everitt's Australian roots probably give him an edge in this race considering the Hawkeyes had success with fellow Aussies Tory Taylor and Rhys Dakin, but Philpott will certainly have something to say about that.

Everitt may have the Aussie background, but Philpott is the one with a background playing American football.

Philpott's punting skills definitely helped the 2025 Storm post their first winning season (6-4) since 2018. The sophomore averaged 43.9 yards on 40 punt attempts to rank third in D-III. Eleven of these punts went for over 50 yards, and his 78-yard punt in November was the fourth-longest in Simpson history.

New Iowa special teams coordinator Chris Polizzi told the media in the spring that all positions were wide-open, so unless something drastic changes before fall camp, Philpott is still very much in the race to be the Hawkeyes' next punter.
