The offensive line may be the most questionable unit for the Kansas State Wildcats due to injuries to John Pastore and George Fitzpatrick
The Kansas State Wildcats are less than a week from the season opener against Nicholls Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
One of the biggest concerns remains the state of the offensive line. They were dealt season-ending injuries to tackles John Pastore and George Fitzpatrick. It has left first-year coach Collin Klein to find replacements while also evaluating which young players are most ready to contribute.
Klein has even said he plans to use a rotation by committee approach early in the season to see who steps up.
"I think it's going to galvanize because of the character of that room," Klein said in an interview with KSNT Sports. Because of the leadership around them. No doubt, you never want to see anyone have to deal or go through those injuries or those setbacks. Unfortunately, it is part of this game and that's why that competition, that position flexibility are so critical to develop on your roster so you're able to move forward and well for your team."
Fitzpatrick is out with the same medical emergency that sidelined him the previous season. Pastore, a preseason Big 12 selection by the media, sustained a lower leg injury during the preseason that required surgery.
The Wildcats coaching staff has singled out some linemen who have impressed in training camp. Among them were junior Charlie Adams, sophomore Chase Duarte and freshman Oliver Miller.
Adams is obviously the most experienced after beginning his playing career at Cal Poly. Last year he started 10 games and didn't allow a sack. Duarte played in six games last season at San Diego State. Miller is the most intriguing because he was one of the nation's top tackles after starring at Cherry Creek (Colo.) High School, the same place that produced Fitzpatrick and receiver Max Lovett.
All three will be given every opportunity to earn playing time.
