With 39 days until kickoff for the LSU Tigers, it's time to highlight the next player to don that jersey number in Baton Rouge.

The LSU Tigers football season is inching closer, now down to double digits on the countdown clock. Kickoff against the Clemson Tigers is now just 39 days away.

As we continue to look back at the history of the Bayou Bandits to celebrate and prepare heading into the first game, there is also the matter of getting to know the current-day players.

Here is a look at the past and present of No. 39 at LSU:

No. 39 - DB Lavonte Williams

Williams was an extremely late addition to the roster, making up for the loss of Aidan Anding for the year due to injury. The Tigers needed another body in the room, and Williams offers some nice upside as a JUCO standout.

Featured stories

It doesn't take much thinking to understand why LSU was in on Williams. He's a defensive back listed at 6-foot-3, 180 pounds. These are the types of athletes that Corey Raymond and this defensive staff want in the room. Think of DJ Pickett, listed at 6-foot-4, and recent commit Markez Davis, who has a very similar build to Williams.

These are tall, lanky defensive backs who have speed to keep up and the length to disrupt plays that others can't.

Williams was a top JUCO transfer available, the second-highest-ranked cornerback, per the 247Sports composite rankings. He might not even see the field much, but this is a good job by the coaching staff to find quality depth.

No. 39 - LS Mack Mulhern

Mulhern is one of two long snappers on the roster and comes in as the presumed starter. He is part of a special teams duo with punter Hayden Craig, who both came over from the Florida Gators.

The Arizona native was a highly-touted long snapper recruit coming out of high school who did not play a snap as a true freshman. He will have four full years of eligibility and could realistically spend that entire time as the Tigers' long snapper.

Highlighting A Former Player Who Wore No. 39

WR Russell Gage Jr. (2014-2017)

Before he broke out in his final year at LSU, Gage was a depth player stuck in a number that productive skill position players don't usually wear. He wasn't a typical player, though. He was mostly just an elite athlete who needed a chance to make an impact. He was a quarterback in high school. He played a little defensive back with the Tigers as well, but ended up as a wide receiver. Despite just 282 career receiving yards, he was a sixth-round draft pick and was in the NFL just last year.
