These are three keys to victory for the LSU Tigers this weekend against the Kentucky Wildcats in their SEC face-off.
The LSU Tigers had a bit of a "get right" game against McNeese last weekend, but now it's back to the SEC as they travel to take on the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday night.
The Wildcats fell out of the top 25 after the most recent update, but they are still riding high on a three-game win streak. This team is better than most expected going into the season. Will Stein's squad should not be overlooked because they aren't ranked.
Here are some keys to victory for the Tigers to focus on this weekend to avoid the upset:
Shut Down The Ground Game
Kentucky has a two-man rushing attack in CJ Baxter and Jason Patterson. Both are legitimate threats and have been a large reason as to why the Wildcats have surprised so far.
Baxter was a five-star running back in high school, the top in his class. He started his career with the Texas Longhorns, but battled injuries and ended up joining Kentucky this season. He has 361 yards and six touchdowns on 68 carries.
Patterson has been a homerun threat, picking up 7.9 yards per carry. In total, he has 355 yards and three scores on just 45 rushing attempts.
Let Sam Leavitt Cook
There has been a large emphasis on Leavitt's arm over the past two weeks as he recovers from this lower-body injury, and LSU is all the better for it. That being said, if he can use his legs a bit again, rushing quarterbacks have given the Wildcats some fits this year.
The best version of Leavitt is one that is balanced between sticking in the pocket to deliver decisive passes and being the kind of quarterback who can extend plays with his legs. The question is whether he is healthy enough to do both now that he has added confidence in his arm.
Kentucky has had trouble tackling this year. That should mean great things for Leavitt and Dilin Jones, who have been hard to bring down already.
Make Kenny Minchey Uncomfortable
The Wildcats' offensive line, headlined by former Tigers freshman star Lance Heard, has been fantastic this year. Kentucky blockers have allowed 24 pressures, per Pro Football Focus. LSU's, for comparison, have allowed 44.
Minchey has been efficient when given time to operate this season. He has completed 68.3% of his passes for 1,148 yards, 11 touchdowns and just one interception. The Wildcats passing attack has also been able to generate explosive plays. This will be a good test for Tigers stars Princewill Umanmielen and Deuce Geralds, who have been off to fantastic starts this year.
