The LSU Tigers and Lane Kiffin have been busy rebuilding their roster in the transfer portal since it opened up on January 2. The first couple of days were quiet, but things have started to pick up one the Tigers starter getting visitors.
Entering Tuesday, the Tigers had added four players, and they were all on the offensive side of the ball. While that is important and may have more holes, they also needed to do some work on their defense.
Getting Blake Baker back was massive, as they didn't see nearly as many players enter the portal as the offense did. Still, they lost some players to the portal and some starters ran out of eligibility.
LSU finally added some defensive talent on Tuesday with two impact players committing before the afternoon was over. Here is what you need to know about the new Tigers:
© Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn ImagesBenefield is probably the biggest addition out of the portal to this point. He's the highest-ranked, at least. He's the No. 34 overall player and second-ranked safety per the 247Sports portal rankings.
The safety had 107 tackles with 8.5 going for a loss to go along with two interceptions and four passes broken up. That brings him to 235, 18, five and 12 for his career in those respective spots.
He has great size at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and uses that to play all over the defense. With Dashawn Spears taking that free safety role, Benefield could be perfect to slide into that AJ Haulcy box safety or even a STAR role like Harold Perkins.
© Bob Donnan-Imagn ImagesGreen was their second four-star transfer of the day and their class. He is a productive veteran defensive lineman. The Tigers had an amazing defensive line recruiting class, but still needed to add some players with some experience to go along with the youngsters.
Green had 34 career tackles with five for a loss and 3.5 sacks. He was the No. 85 overall player and the sixth-ranked defensive lineman of the portal class. He's a solidly balanced player that did well when he was on the field for the Tigers.
