The LSU Tigers rose one spot in this week's AP Poll update, following their win over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

The LSU Tigers needed a strong second-half performance, but their poll ranking is secure after beating the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on Saturday night.

The AP Poll released its Week 2 update on Sunday afternoon, and the Tigers actually moved up one spot to No. 7. It was more about the Oregon Ducks moving down than them earning a higher ranking, though.

Next week's matchup with the 2-0 Ole Miss Rebels has maintained its importance, as they stayed one spot behind LSU at No. 8. The Tigers are the third-highest-ranked SEC team, with the Texas Longhorns overtaking the top slot and the Georgia Bulldogs right behind them.

It is the defense that has LSU afloat once again early this year, after the offense came out flat against the Bulldogs. Sam Leavitt had three interceptions in the first half. Tre Wilson had a fumble. That lack of ball protection was a direct cause of the slow start and is something that the coaching staff will certainly be focusing on all week.

Along with Leavitt's questionable decision-making, the offensive line didn't provide much help. Louisiana Tech's defensive line picked up five sacks and 11 total tackles for loss. The rushing attack had no push, leading to a team average of just 3.3 yards per carry. Dilin Jones was far less effective, though he was still able to break at least one long run.

The Rebels are far less likely to let them stick around, though the Tigers' defense might force the issue. Over two games, it looks like LSU might have the single best unit in the country. They have everything last year's team offered, plus an elite pass rush to go with it.

Princewill Umanmielen has already surpassed Harold Perkins' sack total last year with five, and Perkins led the Tigers' defense. Umanmielen has moved with a mix of quickness and violence that would be hard for anyone to stop. Jordan Ross has been freed up a bit by it as well, as he got involved in another sack this week as well.

TJ Dottery has been a difference-maker at linebacker next to Whit Weeks. Dottery forced two fumbles and showed out in all phases once again.

Freshman phenom Deuce Geralds also enjoyed a breakout performance, forcing a third Bulldog fumble and picking up his first career sack. If he is able to provide consistent pressure up the middle as well, this defense will be unstoppable. So far, they've been able to get home while sending just four.

Through these two games, LSU has both looked like they should be a few spots higher and like they may need to adjust their expectations. There will be some clarification next week.
