Memphis’ head coach Charles Huff is filling out his new staff, and it looks like he’s made his decision on three new coaches, according to multiple reports. Huff is expected to bring in wide receivers coach Aaron Dobson, offensive line coach Andy Kwon and defensive line coach Eric Mathies.
Both Dobson and Mathies join the Tigers staff after spending last season at Southern Mis, while Kwon will join after one season with UCLA.
Kwon spent time on staff with Huff at Alabama, where he served as a graduate assistant from 2018-2020. Following the stint with the Crimson Tide, Kwon spent three seasons as the offensive line coach at Arkansas State before taking over at UCLA.
At Arkansas State, Kwon’s offensive line helped improve the run-game from 88.2 yards per game to 156.9 yards per game in two seasons. In his lone year with the Bruins, the offense averaged 319.9 yards, including 139.7 rushing yards and 180.2 passing yards.
Dobson spent four seasons in the NFL, including two seasons with the New England Patriots, before he started coaching. The wide receiver returned to his alma mater and spent two years at Marshall under Huff.
When Huff made the move to Southern Miss, Dobson followed, and it looks like he’ll follow Huff again to Memphis. In 2024, Dobson led a unit that averaged 181 receiving yards per game, and this season, Southern Miss’ receivers averaged 266.7 yards per game under Dobson.
Mathies is expected to take over as the defensive line coach after spending a season with Huff at Southern Miss. Prior to joining the Southern Miss staff, Mathies spent a year at Eastern Kentucky and four years as the defensive coordinator at Long Island.
The new defensive line coach also has coached at three current American Conference teams. Mathies spent four season at South Florida, two years at FAU and a season at North Texas. At all three stops he served as the defensive line coach.
According to Jonah Dylan at the Commercial Appeal, Huff will not retain any coaches from the Tigers’ current staff.
