The transfer portal is officially open, and the Memphis coaching staff has been busy giving out offers to players in the transfer portal. On Thursday, the University officially announced Charles Huff’s first coaching staff for the Tigers, which included many names that were with him last season at Southern Miss.
With multiple coaches following Huff to Memphis, it would make sense that players would follow the coaches as well, and a handful of Southern Miss players have already received offers from the Tigers. Huff was only at Southern Miss for one season and had a lot of players follow him from Marshall to Hattiesburg, and there are a few of those players who still have eligibility.
Here’s a look at some of the players who have received offers from the new Memphis staff:
LB Chris Jones
Chris Jones is the biggest name from last year’s Southern Miss team, and he has received offers from multiple schools already, including several Power Four schools. Jones finished the season inside the top 10 nationally in total tackles, and he has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
According to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, Ole Miss and Florida State have emerged as two schools to keep an eye on in the recruiting process.
Jones finished the season with 133 tackles, one interception, a fumble recovery and three pass deflections in 13 games for the Golden Eagles.
Jones already has a ton of interest from Power Four schools, but the Tigers should at least be in play with his relationship with most of the staff. This could be one where the offers from other programs become too much, but it would be a massive get for Huff and his staff.
S Ian Foster
Ian Foster is another player from the Southern Miss defense who entered the transfer portal. The safety has played for Huff at Marshall and Southern Miss and posted on social media that he’s received an offer from Memphis.
As a redshirt sophomore, Foster recorded 75 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 10 pass deflections, three interceptions and a forced fumble. The safety was part of the Golden Eagles’ defense that led the country in interceptions, and his defensive backs coach, Dominique Bowman, is now with the Tigers.
A handful of schools have already offered the safety, but after following Huff to Marshall and Southern Miss, it feels like Memphis is in a good spot to land the safety.
S Dylan King
Dylan King is another name to watch in the transfer portal after spending one season at Southern Miss. The safety has spent time at multiple different schools, spending a season at Tennessee State before becoming a JUCO All-American at East Mississippi Community College.
King recorded 27 tackles and a pass deflection in 11 games, and he’s another safety that could follow his position coach to Memphis. The redshirt junior has posted offers from Tulsa, UAB and Arkansas State outside of the Tigers, and it will be interesting to see what other offers he receives.
King has only been with this coaching staff for a season, but he could be a guy who follows Huff and his staff to Memphis.
WR Tychaun Chapman
Wide receiver Tychaun Chapman is the only player on this list, but he’s not the only offensive player who could make the move from Southern Miss to Memphis. Like Foster, Chapman made the move from Marshall to Hattiesburg, and he has another opportunity to follow the coaching staff to the bluff city.
Chapman, who started his career at North Carolina, recorded 448 yards and three touchdowns on 25 receptions in 2025, finishing third on the team in receiving yards.
Aaron Dobson, who takes over as the Tigers’ wide receivers coach, coached Chapman at both Marshall and Southern Miss, so it makes a lot of sense for Chapman to make a similar move. Chapman hasn’t posted any offers, but it’s likely the staff has already had conversations with him.
