Memphis returns to action for a primetime Halloween game against Army. Both teams enter this game with two losses and will look to keep their conference championship hopes alive.

The Black Knights started the season 2-2, but they’ve won three straight since then. They lost to South Florida in week two, and on the road against Louisiana Tech in week 4.

In the game against USF, Jeff Monken’s team led most of the way, but the Bulls went for it on 4th-and-long in the closing seconds of the game and converted it for the win.

Senior Cale Hellums leads the Army offense, and he has rushed for 840 yards and 16 touchdowns in the Black Knights’ triple-option offense. While he’s more of a running threat, he has thrown for 422 yards, three touchdowns and an interception on 69 attempts.

Running back Godspower Nwawuihe could also cause problems for the Tigers, and he’s rushed for 355 yards and three touchdowns on 60 carries this year.

The Black Knights have an experienced offensive line, and they average the least amount of penalties per game.

Defensively, Monken’s team ranks second in the conference in scoring defense, allowing only 22.1 points per game. Linebacker Elijah Walton leads the team with 52 tackles, two pass deflections and an interception.

What to watch for in the Tigers’ game against Army:

Memphis has gotten out to slow starts in its last three games, but they were able to rally and win two of those. It might not be that easy against the Black Knights. With Army’s option offense, they will waste a ton of time while on offense, and that could give the Tigers problems if they fall behind.

Charles Huff’s team must get out to a better start, and that starts on the offensive side of the ball. Marcus Stokes threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns last week, but most of that production came in the second half.

The Tigers will need to put up points against the Black Knights and play with a lead.

Memphis’ defense has done a nice job keeping them in the game these last few weeks, but they’ve had a habit of giving up chunk plays at times. With the way Army uses multiple players in the offense, the defense must bring their A games and limit the home run plays.
