The busy day for Memphis football continued Sunday afternoon when On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Southern Miss defensive lineman J’Mond Tapp has committed to Memphis. Tapp becomes the sixth player to commit or sign with the Tigers on Sunday, and he joins a long list of former Golden Eagles to follow Charles Huff to Memphis.
Memphis has since officially announced the signing of Tapp.
This will be the fourth program that Tapp has played for in his collegiate career, and it’s the third straight season that he has transferred.
Tapp was a 4-star and top-150 recruit out of high school, according to Rivals, and he signed with Texas over offers from Alabama, LSU and Florida. In two seasons with the Longhorns, Tapp recorded 9 tackles in nine games before entering the transfer portal and signing with Arizona State.
The defensive lineman only spent one season with the Sun Devils, where he didn’t see any action during the 2024 season. He entered the transfer portal again and landed at Southern Miss with Huff.
In his lone season with the Golden Eagles, Tapp recorded 70 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks, and he finished the season with an 89.7 Pro Football Focus defensive grade, which led the team. The defensive grade led all defensive players in the Sun Belt last year and ranked No. 19 nationally among edge rushers.
In addition to the 70 tackles, Tapp recorded 59 total pressures, including 30 quarterback hurries.
Tapp received some interest from several Power Four schools, but the defensive lineman decided to follow Huff and defensive line coach Eric Mathies to Memphis. Tapp will have one season of eligibility remaining and will look to make a massive impact on the Tigers’ defensive line.
With Tapp’s commitment, 31 players have either signed or committed to Memphis through the transfer portal.
