Josh Holloway commits to Memphis cover image

Memphis lands another point guard with the addition of Josh Holloway. The Memphis native spent Monday and Tuesday on a visit with the Tigers and announced his commitment earlier this morning.

Holloway played high school basketball at St. George’s before ending his high school career at Oak Hill Academy. The transfer came shortly after an altercation with Grizzlies guard Ja Morant at Morant’s parents’ house.

The guard signed with Samford out of high school and spent two years playing for Bucky McMillan in Alabama. During his sophomore season, Holloway averaged 7.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals in 33 games, including 11 starts.

After his sophomore season, Holloway followed McMillan to Texas A&M, where he spent his junior campaign. During the season, the guard appeared in 34 games off the bench and averaged 4.6 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 13.3 minutes per game.

Holloway shot 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from deep last season, but for his career, he shoots 44.1 percent from the field and 30.4 percent from three-point range. The guard isn’t much of a three-point shooter, and he hasn’t averaged more than two three-point attempts per game.

Similar to Jayden Reid, who committed to the Tigers on Monday, Holloway likes to attack the basket, and 53 percent of his shot attempts are around the rim. The guard also shines in the pick-and-roll and will be a good fit for Hardaway’s system.

Holloway averages 5.4 assists per 40 minutes, ranking in the 90th percentile, and he had four or more assists in seven games last season despite limited minutes.

The guard will also help the Tigers on the defensive end of the court. Holloway averaged 2.3 steals per 40 minutes last season, which ranked in the 93rd percentile, and he ended the year with a 2.6 defensive regularized adjusted plus-minus, ranking in the 95th percentile.

Despite being 6-foot-1, the guard can be a factor on the boards, and he recorded three or more rebounds in 10 games for Texas A&M last year.

It’s unclear what type of role Holloway will play for the Tigers next season. He has played 102 collegiate games over the last three years, but he has only logged 11 starts.

The Memphis native has the playmaking abilities and defensive effort to be a key piece for the Tigers, and he could be a great option off the bench for Hardaway.

Holloway is the sixth player to commit to Memphis out of the transfer portal, and he’s the 11th player committed to next season’s team. The Tigers have four spots available on the 15-man roster, and they’re still waiting to land a big man.

With Holloway’s addition, Hardaway will have five Memphis natives on the 2026-27 roster.
