According to reports, Tony Madlock is resigning from Alabama State to join Penny Hardaway’s staff as the associate head coach. Madlock spent the first three seasons on Hardaway’s staff before taking a head coaching job at South Carolina Stat
Earlier this month, Memphis announced that Hardaway was parting ways with all three assistant coaches. At a press conference on March 18, Athletic Director Ed Scott said that they would start making hires in the next 7-10 days, and Madlock is the first known addition to the new staff.
Madlock spent the last five seasons as a head coach, including four years with Alabama State. After leading South Carolina State to a 15-16 season in his first year as a head coach, the Hornets hired Madlock to take over a Hornets’ program that hadn’t won more than 12 games in the previous six seasons.
Madlock combined for 21 wins in his first two seasons before taking them to the NCAA Tournament during his third season. Alabama State went 20-16 and won a first four matchup in Dayton before losing to Auburn in the round of 64.
This past season, the Hornets were forced to replace most of their roster and went 10-22 on the year.
The Memphis native is 67-100 as a head coach, including five games as an interim at Ole Miss during the 2017-18 campaign.
As an assistant with the Tigers, Madlock helped Hardaway lead Memphis to a 63-32 record over three seasons, played a vital role on the staff. Hardaway and Madlock were teammates at Memphis, and it’s clear to see the trust that they have in one another.
The Tigers have yet to announce the hire, and it’ll be interesting to see if more additions to the staff will be announced over the next week before the transfer portal opens on April 7.
