The American conference held its media days event on Sunday and Monday, and ESPN+ ran interviews with the players and coaches on Monday. Penny Hardaway brought guard Jayden Reid and wing Tylik Weeks with him to the event, and both players talked about their decision to transfer to Memphis and expectations for the season.

Both players are viewed as leaders for the upcoming season after being major pieces for their teams last year. Both players appeared on the conference’s preseason All-Conference teams, and the Tigers were picked to finish second in the coaches poll.

Reid appeared on the first team, while Weeks was listed on the second team.

Why Jayden Reid is returning to the American at Memphis:

Reid started his career at USF, playing two years before transferring to Northwestern. As a freshman, he averaged 6.8 points and 3.1 assists, and he averaged 12.6 points, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals as a sophomore. Reid was asked about about why he decided to return to the American to play for Memphis, and he said it would be a perfect fit because of the tradition and his experience in the conference.

“Coming to play for coach P and Memphis with their winning history,” Reid said. “I competed against them for two years during my freshman and sophomore years, and it was always great battles. So, once I got into the portal this year, trying to find a winning environment. Obviously, I’m comfortable in this conference, playing here for two years, so I’m excited to get back.”

What Tylik Weeks brings to Memphis:

Weeks was asked what he brings to the Tigers, and he said that he will bring a lot to Memphis when he’s on the floor. Weeks averaged 19.7 points per game last year for Southern Miss, but he said that he can make an impact as a rebounder and a playmaker.

“Obviously scoring, but I feel like it’s more about expanding my game and increasing value,” Weeks said. “Also, I feel like I’m a great rebounder, and I can pass the ball really well.” He said that rebounding and passing have been something that he’s been working on throughout the offseason, but he said the biggest thing he has been working on is getting better on the defensive end of the court.

“Obviously, defense as well,” Weeks said. “I’ve gotta get better at defense.”

Hardaway prioritizes defensive play, and it appears he has been working with the forward to become a better player at that end of the court.

Reid’s fit in the Tigers’ offense:

Reid was asked about his fit in Memphis’ offense, and it sounds like he’s taking a leadership role for Hardaway’s team. He said that he’s planning on being a dynamic playmaker and putting his teammates in the best position possible.

“Just being a leader, most importantly, being a point guard,” Reid said. “Just making sure I’m putting my guys in the right position to be successful. Make their job easier and doing whatever coach Hardaway wants me to do on the court. I have to be an extension of him.”
