The transfer portal has been open for nine days, and teams all over the country are looking for players to improve their roster.
Memphis is one of those teams.
With only two players committed to return from last year’s team and a high school commit, the Tigers entered the offseason with 12 open spots for next year’s roster. After signing a pair of high school products and two transfer portal additions in the last week, Memphis now has eight openings to fill.
There are still plenty of holes to fill on the roster, and here’s a look at four more players that the Tigers have targeted out of. The transfer portal.
G Prophet Johnson (Sacramento State)
Johnson started his collegiate career at Bellevue College before stops at Southern Utah, Fairfield and Sacramento State. With the Hornets, Johnson averaged 18.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists, and he shot 39.2 percent from deep.
Johnson is listed as a four-star transfer portal prospect on EvanMiya.com, and he’s receiving interest from several high-major programs, including Miami, USC and Ohio State. Johnson is a ball-dominant guard, and he might like the idea of learning under a former NBA point guard.
Johnson will need a waiver to be eligible for next season.
G Josh Holloway (Texas A&M)
Holloway started his high school career at St. George’s High School in Collierville before transferring to Oak Hill Academy for his final season. He signed with Samford out of high school and followed his head coach, Bucky McMillan, to Texas A&M.
With the Aggies, Holloway appeared in all 34 games and averaged 4.6 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game off the bench. In his final year at Samford, the guard averaged 7.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game in 33 appearances.
It will be interesting to see how much interest there is in another Memphis product, but it seems like there will be a chance for Holloway to wrap up his career in his hometown.
C Khaman Maker (DePaul)
Maker signed with St. John’s as a three-star recruit and the No. 25 center out of high school. As a freshman, he only appeared in one game with the Red Storm before transferring to DePaul ahead of his sophomore campaign.
As a sophomore, Maker appeared in only 12 games, and he averaged 1.3 points and 1.2 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game. While he hasn’t played much over the last two seasons, a 7-foot-1, 225-pound center will draw a lot of attention from the portal.
F Isaiah Manning (Sam Houston State)
Manning signed with TCU as a three-star recruit out of high school, but he entered the transfer portal after averaging 7.3 minutes in 24 games off the bench as a freshman. The forward landed at Sam Houston State, where he appeared in 16 games off the bench before an injury ended his season in January.
With the Bearkats, Manning averaged 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and shot 46 percent from the field. Manning’s best game came in a 23-point outing against Western Kentucky, where he went 4-for-9 from deep.
