On Monday, Marcus Stokes was named to the Davey O’Brien “Davey Double” Great 8 list, the Manning Award Stars of the Week list and was named the American Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Stokes earned the honors after going 20-for-25 for 318 yards and five touchdowns on Saturday’s game against Charlotte. Most of that production came from the first half, and Charles Huff decided to put in the backups in the third quarter.
In the first half, Stokes went 15-for-18 for 260 yards and three touchdowns, helping lead the Tigers to a 24-0 lead. In the last two first quarters, the starting quarterback has combined to complete 90 percent of his passes for 476 yards and six touchdowns.
He also added 61 yards on nine carries to finish the game as the second leading rusher.
The quarterback threw touchdowns to four different receivers, including two touchdown passes to tight end Hunter Tipton.
It’s the second time a Memphis offensive player has earned the Offensive Player of the Week award after Jaylin Carter won the award after week 1. It’s also the second time Stokes has appeared on the league’s weekly football honors after he was listed as an honorable mention after his performance in week 3 against UT Martin.
The Tigers have the fourth-most efficient passing offense in the country, and he ranks No. 16 in passing yards, No. 6 in passing touchdowns and No. 7 in quarterback rating.
He was also named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 List, which recognizes the eight best quarterback performances during the week, but this week was the “Davey Double” week, so 16 quarterbacks were listed. He was one of four Group of Six quarterbacks listed on the Davey O’Brien “Davey Double” Great 8 list, joining Oregon State’s Braden Atkinson, Georgia State’s Cameran Brown and South Alabama’s Jared Hollins.
By being named to the Great 8 list, Stokes is automatically named to the Davey O’Brien Award Midseason Watch List. The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week will be announced on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
He was also named to the Manning Award Stars of the Week List, along with seven other quarterbacks. He was one of only two quarterbacks named on the weekly list along wth Atkinson.
The Manning Award was created in 2004, but the Stars of the Week list started in 2011. Since it began, it has recognized 628 different quarterbacks from 138 different schools.
Memphis returns to action on Saturday for the Battle of the Bones against UAB.
