Memphis is getting a new arena football team this summer. The Arena League announced a new team, the Hound Dogs, in November, and their inaugural season begins on May 30.
This week, the Hound Dogs announced their 15-man roster, which features mostly Memphis natives and a handful of former Tigers. 11 of the 15 players are from Memphis, while offensive and defensive lineman Matthew Parker is from Brighton.
The roster also features five players who played for the Tigers. The most recent Tigers on the roster are Greg Rubin and Cormantae Hamilton, both of whom wrapped up their careers in 2024.
Greg Rubin
Rubin played four seasons with the Tigers, and he was the first player that the new arena team announced on their roster. The defensive back signed with Memphis after playing at White Station High School, and he made 11 starts as a true freshman.
He became a mainstay on the Tigers' defense during his four-year campaign, and he played 49 games over the four seasons. He recorded 222 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and forced four fumbles throughout his career.
Like Hamilton, Rubin is listed as a two-way player, and it appears he will play defensive back and wide receiver for the Hound Dogs.
Cormontae Hamilton
Hamilton was the second player that the Hound Dogs announced on their roster earlier this week. Hamilton played at Whitehaven High School before signing with Ohio State.
The defensive lineman spent his first two seasons with the Buckeyes before transferring to Memphis. Hamilton played three seasons with the Tigers and recorded 87 tackles, seven sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss in 39 games.
Hamilton played tight end in high school, and he’s listed as a tight end and defensive lineman for the Hound Dogs.
Michael Stackens
Stackens played for Memphis from 2004 to 2006 as a defensive end. He most recently played for the Memphis Blast, which participates in the Gridiron Developmental Football League.
Keiwone Malone
Malone started his career at Alabama but transferred to Memphis after his true freshman season. Malone spent the next four seasons with the Tigers, and he recorded 1,497 yards and nine touchdowns throughout his Memphis career.
Malone also made the game-tying touchdown catch against BYU in the Miami Beach Bowl, which ultimately sent the game into its first overtime.
Sky Forest
Forest is the final player on the roster who spent time at Memphis. Forest won a state championship at Lausanne Collegiate School in 2017, and he started his collegiate career with the Tigers before transferring to Lane College.
Forest is one of two quarterbacks on the Hound Dogs roster.
