Memphis has secured three commitments out of the transfer portal, and it has seven spots available for next year’s roster. One of the players that Memphis has been in contact with is Southern Miss forward Tylik Weeks.
Weeks started his collegiate career at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he was ranked the No. 26 JUCO prospect, before spending one season in Hattiesburg. With the Golden Eagles, Weeks led the team with 19.7 points per game and added 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest.
The Tigers have shown interest in the 6-foot-7 forward, and they met with him on Zoom shortly after the transfer portal opened. Weeks has started taking visits, and he just wrapped up a visit with Ole Miss.
It appears the forward is interested in setting up a visit with Memphis, and he even commented “tuff" under Jerry Deng’s commitment post, if that means anything.
Shooting
Weeks’ nickname is “bully”, and one of the reasons for that moniker is because of the way he attacks the basket. The forward likes to attack the basket, and he’s a crafty finisher at the rim.
34 percent of his shots come at the rim, mainly on possessions where he was attacking the rim, but he also likes the mid-range jumper. While he found a lot of success at the rim, he has struggled as a three-point shooter, shooting 22.2 percent from deep last year.
Weeks was a major piece of Southern Miss’ offense, and he has a usage rate of 30 percent.
Playmaking
Weeks isn’t known as a playmaker, but he has shown the ability to move the ball and make plays. The forward averaged 2.3 assists per game last year, and he had five games with five or more assists, including a nine-assist game against Arkansas State.
While he can play a role as a playmaking forward, he struggles with turnovers at times, averaging 2.6 turnovers per game last season. If Weeks joins the Tigers, nobody will ask him to be a major playmaker, but he has shown he possesses the skillset to facilitate at times.
Rebounding
The forward averaged five or more rebounds in each of his last three collegiate seasons, and he averaged 5.4 rebounds last year in Hattiesburg. The forward averaged more than eight rebounds in both seasons at Southwest Mississippi Community College, and he could give Memphis a rebounding threat, despite being more of a small forward.
Defense
Defensively, Weeks averaged 0.3 blocks and 0.9 steals per game last year, and Evan Miya gave him an “A-“ defensive court impact grade. The forward also averaged only 2.5 fouls per game last year, showing that he can defend without fouling.
