Memphis lost its second game of the season on Friday night in a road game against Tulane. Turnovers and missed opportunities plagued the Tigers all night, and after the game, running back Jaylin Carter and safety Ahmere Foster met with the media.
Both players had nice performances in the loss, but neither player wanted to talk about their individual performance. Carter was asked about his feelings after having a good game but losing, and he quickly said it wasn’t about himself but about the team as a whole.
The running back ran for 135 yards on 23 attempts, and he is up to 780 yards and eight touchdowns on 112 carries this season. Carter ranks in the top 20 nationally in carries, yards, touchdowns and average yards per attempt.
Foster recorded five tackles and had the Tigers’ only interception.
Here’s what Carter and Foster said after the loss.
Felling and message in the locker room after the game:
Both players were asked about the feeling in the locker room after the game, and Foster described it as a surreal feeling.
“It was a surreal feeling, man,” Foster said. “It was tough. It was a tough feeling, man.”
Carter said that Huff’s message to the team after the loss was to pick each other up and remain together as a team. It seems like the biggest piece of the message was not to let one loss turn into multiple losses during the second half of the season.
“Continue to pick each other up,” Carter said. “We’re a team. We’re well connected. That’s the main thing.”
Foster said most players were ready to turn the page and move on to the next game, which will be Thursday against East Carolina.
“We do have a short week,” Huff said. “We’ve got to flip to the next page and get ready for Thursday. It was a tough feeling, but we’re ready to get back out there and play.”
How the defense was able to go out there and putting together stops:
While the offense struggled to maintain drives, the defense did a nice job for most of the night limiting the Green Wave. In the second half, the Tigers held Tulane scoreless until the Green Wave scored its final touchdown on a fourth-and-one conversion.
Foster was asked how the defense continued to go out and make plays when put in difficult situations.
“It just comes from training,” Foster said. “All summer training. People going to be fatigued, but we trained under heavy fatigue all summer. So, just playing off our instincts and just giving all we’ve got for our brothers.”
Quick turnaround to East Carolina:
Finally, Foster was asked if it helps the team to have a quick turnaround from the loss to the next game against ECU. The defensive back said it was huge to have a quick turnaround to move on to the next page.
“It helps us a lot, man,” Foster said. “We’re just ready to get this bad taste out of our mouths and get rid of the loss quickly. We’ve got this Thursday game, so we’re getting right to it.”
The Pirates are 3-3 and are coming off a 13-point overtime loss against UAB. ECU lost to the Blazers on Thursday night, so it will have a full week off before traveling to Memphis.
