Coach J.D. Arteaga leads the Miami Hurricanes into a high-stakes Gainesville showdown, navigating a double-elimination bracket are in-state rivals and gritty underdogs to reclaim Super Regional glory.
Miami, FL. – In Monday’s afternoon Selection Show, the Miami Hurricanes will remain in the Sunshine State for the upcoming NCAA Baseball Division I Tournament, landing in the Gainesville Regional. They’re grouped alongside the hostess Florida Gators, who will face the four-seed Rider Broncos, and the three-seed Troy Trojans. The Hurricanes will have three days to prepare before traveling to Northern Florida and stepping into Condron Family Ballpark for the Regional openers.
Unlike the College Football Playoffs and March Madness, there are multiple opportunities to win and advance. Here is the pathway for the Hurricanes getting through the Regional round:
As a two-seed, Coach J.D. Arteaga and the team will face the Trojans. If the Hurricanes win, as projected, they will face the winner of the Gators-Broncos matchup in the winners' bracket. However, in a loss scenario, they would face the loser in the loser’s bracket.
If the Hurricanes are facing the Gators or Broncos from the loser’s bracket, a win keeps the team’s hopes alive, but a loss marks the very end of a short-lived journey. In a scenario where they advanced from a single-elimination game, the next matchup would be the loser of the Trojans and Gators or Broncos. The Hurricanes would need to win two more games, including a Game 7, to advance to the Super Regionals.
If the Coral Gables campus wins three games straight, it’s a more direct path.
On the other side of the bracket is the Hattiesburg Regional, grouping the Southern Miss Eagles, Virginia Cavaliers, Jacksonville State Gamecocks, and Little Rock Trojans. The first to three wins from these four teams would face the Hurricanes, if they advance from their own Regional.
Coach Arteaga ended the program’s Super Regional drought last year, falling just a win short against the Louisville Cardinals of a trip to Omaha, Nebraska, to the College World Series. Senior second baseman Jake Ogden, redshirt senior left fielder Max Galvin, junior All-American third baseman Daniel Cuvet, and fifth-year senior right fielder Derek Williams played in that heartbreaking loss.
The Hurricanes have the offense to pick right back up, but inconsistent pitching, infield defense, and errors have held them back in numerous key matchups. The ACC Tournament showed positive flashes of what they’re capable of when everything is going right, but it needs to be consistent, even when things aren’t working out perfectly.
A trip to Omaha won’t come easy, especially in a potential matchup against an in-state rival. The Regionals will start on Friday, May 29.
