The Miami Hurricanes' quarterback room transforms with a Heisman contender and promising freshman, setting the stage for another explosive season after a championship run.

After the National Championship game, it marked the end of a long college football journey for quarterback Carson Beck. He spent five seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs, winning two National Championships as a backup, then was a starter for the final two years of his tenure.

After suffering a UCL injury in the SEC championship game in 2024, Beck withdrew from the NFL draft, entered the transfer portal, and then shortly after signed with the Hurricanes. What was first viewed as a gamble eventually paid off tremendously for both him and the program.

Beck started in all 16 games, completed 338 of 467 passes, 72.4 percent, throwing for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns. He led the Hurricanes to their first National Championship appearance since the 2002 season. Despite the loss, Beck proved doubters wrong and will head to the NFL.

Backup quarterback Emory Williams entered the transfer portal and committed to the East Carolina Pirates. He spent three seasons with the Hurricanes, appearing in 12 games, two starts, completing 73 of 116 passes, 62.9 percent, throwing for 813 yards and four touchdowns.

The quarterback room will look different and perhaps improved.

The starter is Darian Mensah, who transferred from the Duke Blue Devils. He completed 334 of 500 passes, 66.8 percent, throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns in 14 games. The 21-year-old led the program to its first ACC football championship since 1989.

Mensah has the capabilities of Beck and Cam Ward, being able to throw with tremendous accuracy and extend drives with his legs. He's viewed as an early Heisman Trophy candidate, surrounded by high-quality weapons down the field and behind him. If the offensive line manages to be as strong as it was for Beck, the Hurricanes may have one of the best offenses in the nation, with Mensah at the helm.

The projected backup is Luke Nickel, who didn't appear in any games last season. He was a four-star recruit from Milton High School. He completed 681 of 1,062 passes, 64.1 percent, throwing for 10,138 yards and 107 touchdowns in 45 total games.

Nickel proved to be a dual-threat quarterback, rushing 235 times for 687 yards, scoring 15 touchdowns. He received interest and offers from the Florida State Seminoles, Louisville Cardinals, and Cincinnati Bearcats, among others, before committing to the Hurricanes on Aug. 11, 2023.

At a time when the transfer portal is more active than ever, Nickel staying is a relief for coach Mario Cristobal. If called upon, he's surrounded with tremendous weapons and could rely on the run game in a similar fashion to Beck to limit mistakes, especially turnovers.

The third string is looking to be three-star freshman Dereon Coleman. He's part of a top-10-ranked recruiting class, the only quarterback from high school. Coleman attended Jones High School, completing 513 of 716 passes, 71.6 percent, throwing for 8,397 yards and 72 touchdowns in 43 total games.

The Orlando native also proved to be a dual-threat quarterback, rushing 226 times for 1,345 yards, scoring 12 touchdowns. Coleman has an opportunity to develop and learn behind great veteran quarterbacks.

The Hurricanes have three reliable quarterbacks, but to carve out another National Championship run, Mensah will need to take another leap in production. It will be an interesting situation to monitor as spring training opens.
