The Miami Hurricanes look to continue being among the best defenses in the nation, especially with the recruitment of five-star defensive back Honor Fa'alave-Johnson. He currently attends Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, California. Despite being utilized on both sides of the field, Johnson's primary position is at safety.
It was reported on Wednesday, Feb. 11, that the five-star recruit has narrowed down his list to six programs: the Hurricanes, Texas Longhorns, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oregon Ducks, LSU Tigers, and USC Trojans.
As a freshman, Johnson recorded 62 total tackles, 35 solos and 27 assists, one tackle for loss, one quarterback hurry, and 14 passes defended in 15 games. Offensively, he rushed 69 times for 702 yards, scoring 11 touchdowns.
Johnson is listed at 6-1, 190 pounds, and ranked among the top-20 in the nation for the class of 2027. He's only made a few unofficial visits, two with the Trojans and one with the Fighting Irish.
The current high school junior is known as a game-changer who can make an immediate impact for whichever program he chooses. It may be unlikely, but Johnson could be a similar case to former Colorado Buffaloes' Travis Hunter, in terms of actually playing on both sides of the field. He could be utilized as both a wide receiver and safety.
Johnson possesses great speed to play both ways, plus a strong football IQ. The Hurricanes would likely use him primarily as a defender.
The Trojans may be in the driver's seat to land Johnson, given the fact that they're the closest program to San Diego, approximately 125 miles. It's going to take heavier recruitment from the Hurricanes to potentially secure a commitment from him. Regardless, they've made up for securing high school recruits from within the state of Florida.
The Hurricanes' secondary depth chart consists of many in-state talents, such as Damari Brown, Xavier Lucas, Zechariah Poyser, Bryce Fitzgerald, Chris Ewald Jr., Ryan Mack, Isaiah Taylor, and OJ Frederique Jr. Plus, the program has been a hot destination for transfer portal defensive backs, such as Keionte Scott, Jakobe Thomas, plus more recently with Omar Thornton and Conrad Hussey.
Johnson would surely be a great addition, but he isn't irreplaceable for a program that's continuously acquiring great talent to chase a National Championship. He still has plenty of time before making a final decision and announcing a commitment, but this could be a long shot for the Hurricanes.
