After showcasing explosive scoring and elite playmaking with the Miami Hurricanes, Tre Donaldson heads to San Francisco to showcase versatility and defensive spark plug for Golden State.
Miami, FL. – Part of the Miami Hurricanes basketball program’s historic 26-9 turnaround season was former senior guard Tre Donaldson showcasing explosive scoring and playmaking abilities. He averaged 16.4 points on 45.4 percent shooting, 35.9 percent from behind the arc, 3.6 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.4 steals, playing in all 35 games, including 32 starts. Coach Jai Lucas made former senior forward Malik Reneau the primary offensive option, but Donaldson provided a significant lift.
The Tallahassee native went on to earn All-Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team honors.
As an NBA prospect in the upcoming draft, Donaldson is projected not to be called within the 60 total picks. However, there will be opportunities for him to reach a franchise’s radar. After participating in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament and the AWS G League Combine, the 22-year-old will reportedly partake in a pre-draft workout with the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.
Vanderbilt Commodores Tyler Nickel and St. John’s Red Storm Dillon Mitchell will be tagging along.
The Warriors previously held a workout with former senior Hurricanes center Ernest Udeh Jr. They currently hold the No. 11 and 54 picks. However, things could change, given the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade block situation. If the Warriors wound up in the mix, the front office would need to put together a package surrounding guard Brandin Podziemski.
Donaldson could be viewed as a reliable, ready-now rookie prospect. In four years of college basketball, he won two conference tournament championships: the SEC with the Auburn Tigers and the Big 10 with the Michigan Wolverines. Donaldson is a player who can buy into a certain role, but pop off for an explosive performance.
In a matchup against the Virginia Tech Hokies with the Hurricanes, he scored a collegiate career high 32 points on 54.2 percent shooting, along with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 35 minutes.
Donaldson doesn’t just score and facilitate, but shows great effort on the defensive side of the court as well. Regardless of being listed at nearly 6-2 at the G League combine, he is capable of staying in front of matchups and causing disruption.
The former Hurricanes lead guard is currently a candidate to sign a two-way contract with any organization. Despite facing a height discrepancy, Donaldson has the talent and work ethic to provide a winning impact. However, the opportunity might not come easily for him.
Donaldson will have the upcoming Las Vegas Summer League to continue showing out in front of league front office members and scouts.
