The extended transfer portal window for players on the Miami Hurricanes roster closes on Saturday at 11:59 p.m. local time. There have been notable departures, the retention of running back Girard Pringle Jr., along with new additions, such as offensive lineman Jamal Meriweather from the Georgia Bulldogs.
Despite a few household names declaring the upcoming NFL draft, such as Francis Mauigoa, Markel Bell, Wesley Bissainthe, and others, linebacker Mohamed Toure has reportedly informed the Hurricanes about returning for a final season in college football.
He led the team this past season with 84 total tackles, 38 solos and 46 assists, three tackles for loss, two sacks, and six passes defended in 16 games.
Toure transferred to the Hurricanes as part of the 2025 recruiting class, which included quarterback Carson Beck, defensive backs Keionte Scott and Jakobe Thomas, and wide receivers Keelan Marion and CJ Daniels, along with others.
The New Jersey native spent six years in the Big Ten with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, but suffered two season-ending injuries in 2022 and 2024, which allowed extra eligibility. He recorded 168 total tackles, 80 solos and 88 assists, 22.5 tackles for loss for 99 yards, 13.5 sacks for 84 yards, two interceptions, five passes defended, and three forced fumbles in 37 total games throughout his tenure.
Toure played in all four bowl games in the Hurricanes' historic run towards the National Championship game, recording 30 tackles, 16 solos and 14 assists, one tackle for loss, one sack, and three passes defended. He'll have a chance to compete for a starting role next season, with Bissainthe declaring for the draft, who started in 15 out of 16 games.
"Honestly, I'm blessed to be here," Toure told media following the loss against the Indiana Hoosiers in the National Championship game. "My story, the things that I've been through, the things I've overcome. It hurts, but at the same time, I thank God for putting me in this position."
The Hurricanes' defense was critical to having an outstanding season. Given the departures in the front seven and secondary, Toure adds valuable experience and leadership.
Mario Cristobal has successfully turned the program around compared to finishing with a 5-7 record in his first year as a head coach. A new standard and culture have been established for the next players ready to take over.
A couple of other notable returns are running back Mark Fletcher Jr. and wide receiver Malachi Toney.
The Hurricanes look to remain competitive next season, only missing a starting-caliber quarterback.
