The Miami Hurricanes and Mario Cristobal recently got a verbal commitment from quarterback Israel Abrams
Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal is continuing to win the offseason.
On Friday, the Hurricanes received a commitment from four-star quarterback Israel Abrams, who is the No. 3 player in the nation at his position. Roundtable Sports contributor Rudy Rodriquez-Chomat, who hosts the "Hurricanes Unfiltered" podcast, said this is expected to have a major impact on the UM recruiting front.
"This is a massive pickup for the Hurricanes," Rodriguez-Chomat said. "I think this probably wraps up what they're going to do at quarterback. I can't imagine they're going to keep looking at other quarterbacks. This young man, from everything that I've read, seems to be a guy that's 100 percent all in being a Hurricane, so I don't expect anything to change from him."
Last season Abrams completed 233 of 340 passes, throwing for 4,072 yards and 40 touchdowns at Montini Catholic High School in the Chicago area.
"You can only expect him to get bigger, better, stronger, all of that stuff," Rodriguez-Chomat said. "I'm excited about all that stuff. I'm excited about this one. This is the type of thing that could make Miami move away from the transfer portal. You're going to have one of helluva competition at quarterback next year, in my opinion, between Dereon Coleman, him (Abrams) and whoever they bring in."
Abrams feels like he made the perfect decision. The Hurricanes are coming off a loss to the Indiana Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff title game.
“I think what really did it for us was being down there [in Coral Gables],” he said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show on ESPN. “The coaches were nothing but helpful and full of information. They did enough to make us believe in them. I think that’s a place I can pursue my dreams and do something I want to do, which is just win and win games with my teammates. That’s all I’m about, getting my guys better and my guys [making] me better. When I get to Miami, my only thing will be to try to win us a National Championship every year. I want to be in Heisman [Trophy] talks from the jump.”
