Hurricanes ‘Watching’ For Superstar Quarterback Transfers cover image

The Miami Hurricanes are a potential landing spot for quarterback DJ Lagway, as he plans to enter the transfer portal, ending his Florida Gators tenure.

The Miami Hurricanes are solely focused on the task at hand, the College Football Playoffs, facing the Texas A&M Aggies. However, depending on how far the team goes, Carson Beck's collegiate chapter is coming to a close. The 23-year-old was part of two National Championship runs throughout his tenure with the Georgia Bulldogs. He will have another chance at it with the Hurricanes, but time will tell how high the story ends.

Regardless, the program will need to find someone else to take over the reins for next season. There are a couple of options that have recently emerged regarding the transfer portal.

Sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway is reportedly planning to depart from the Florida Gators after two seasons with the program.

"To my coaches, the athletic training staff, and every member of the University of Florida community - thank you for pouring into me, believing in me, and showing me nothing but love and support throughout my time in Gainesville," he posted on social media. "After much prayer, reflection, and thoughtful consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal."

The 20-year-old completed 213 of 337 passes, 63.2 percent, for 2,264 yards, recording 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, which led the SEC this season. The Gators finished with a 4-8 record, completely falling short of expectations, which has resulted in the firing of Billy Napier and multiple players also planning to enter the transfer portal.

The Hurricanes are viewed as a landing spot for Lagway, whose story with the Gators ends similarly to Beck and the Bulldogs, leading the SEC in interceptions. They attempted to recruit the five-star prospect coming out of high school before deciding to commit to their in-state rivals.

It's also worth noting that Lagway reportedly wanted to stay with the Gators, but after initial meetings with the new coaching staff, it didn't go well.

The Texas native could be a viable option for the Hurricanes' next quarterback. However, another candidate has emerged. Days before Lagway announced his departure, Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Sam Leavitt announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. The redshirt sophomore completed 361 of 589 passes, 61.3 percent, for 4,513 yards, recording 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 20 games throughout two seasons.

The Hurricanes were also reportedly mentioned as one of four early suitors for the 20-year-old, including the Oregon Ducks, Indiana Hoosiers, and LSU Tigers. However, there's no record of the program showing interest in him coming out of high school.

Leavitt has made no comments at this time about his decision.

Mario Cristobal has proven to be a quarterback guru over the last couple of years with Beck, who's expected to enter the upcoming NFL draft, and Cam Ward, who became the first pick in this year's draft. Either option could work out great in the Hurricanes' favor, but Lagway does have the higher potential.

It will be interesting to see which direction the program goes. However, the College Football Playoffs remain the sole and only focus.
